RAM CAS Latency
Why do so many more people buy http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f312800cl9d8gbxl when they could be buying http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f312800cl7d8gbxm for the same price, its 7 CAS instead of 9... What's wrong with the blue one that I'm not seeing?

the cl7 variety is relatively more costly at $10.22 Price/GB versus cl9 at $10.00 Price/GB.

if it were me, i'd get low latency gskill memory.

ya it's only 5 bucks more... unless latency doesn't even matter at all? I thought it had quite some effect tho

No i don't think latency really matters. Thats why all ddr4 ram, even the most expensive ones that cost £1600, never go below cl14. My new x99 system i just build also has 2666mhz cl15.

take the 1600 cl7 kit
unless the $10 prevents you from getting a better cpu or gpu

to compare kits
speed / cl = value (higher = better)
1600 / 9 = 177
1600 / 7 = 228

over 200 you dont notice much of a diff, but from 148 (1333/9) and 200 (1600/8) its a bigger diff

ddr4 currently has very high timings, makeing most ddr4 kits slower than ddr3

basically the way it works
freq is the speed of the pulses
cl is how many pulses between ram read/write cycles

It's all about the mhz. Thats why cpus for example, don't have any latency specs or anything like that. All about the mhz. It doesnt matter if ram reacts 1ms slower, but if it pumps 2 times more mhz, then it's way better.

freq isnt everything, if its runnign at 3000mhz, and waiting 10,000 pulses between actions its going to be slow
1 cycle about every 3.3 seconds
