Sata Controller Issue?
Hi, need some help here.

Dealing with a dpc latency issue with a nvidia nforce 780i chipset motherboard (ASUS P5n-T Deluxe). Finally grabbed some windows 7 drivers for it that provided full functionality, but the dpc issue continued, and on top of that, I lost access to multiple sub folders on my 2TB drive, again.

A drive that came up fully green in seatools.

I'm also having steam download corruption issues (no matter the installation location) and file corruption/loss problems when transfering between drives or decompressing large archive files, however, no other issues with windows so far, aside from total system lock ups when gaming and firefox crashing regularly.

Otherwise, all parts, bar the motherboard and cpu (e5440) came from a working system, with no issues before being reused and had been uninstalle/reinstalled a couple of times with no problems (had fun getting the P5n-T working, own fault though) cropping up in the old set up at all.

So what I want to know is basically if my suspcision that the sata controller might be at fault is right, and if not, what else do I need to do to trace the cause of my issues?

If it is the sata controller, it's off to ebay, as trademe.co.nz doesn't have much in the way of socket 775 motherboards compatible with a 775-771 mod annoyingly.

sounds like a drive issue
or security/rights issue

try hdtune trial
http://www.hdtune.com/download.html
check the health tab
select the drive
look for 'current pending sectors' and 'reallocated sectors'
if the data column for either of them are more than 0 the drive is going bad

also check the rights on the drive
computer -> right click on the drive -> properties -> security tab -> edit -> add
everyone -> check names -> ok
select everyone -> tick full control -> ok

it was the first gen i5 (1156) boards that had issues with the jmicron sata controller

are you using the jmicron sata controller ? alot of boards from that time frame did , it wasnt very reliable , and i remember it was a pain to update it to one that worked half way decent
No idea sadly if the ASUS P5n-T has it.

Cheers

Nope, windows is throwing an I/O access error on trying to open certain folders, which doesn't occur when it's just permissions issues :P

Thanks though.

then run chkdsk on the drive

computer -> right click on the drive -> properties -> tools tab
error checking, check now
tick both boxes -> start
reboot if necessary

Doing it right now ;)

It's taking ages though for some reason, left it running overnight for 6 hours and it was still on stage 1, with it throwing up multiple "file record XXXXXX is unreadable" in from about 610000 onwards of 759808 file records when restarted via command line.

Last chkdsk on it showed some bad sectors (I'm in Christchurch, NZ, so that's to be expected) and missing file records, but otherwise before the driver installation everything was accessible. Hopefully it's not drive failure, but the way it's looking, I don't have high hopes.

if chkdsk showed some errors last time, then they should have been reported to the smart table on the hdd
which is read by the health tab on hdtune

Or in seatools on the ultimate boot cd :P Which it didn't.

Current eta for stage one to finish, about 5 hrs if current file records processing speeds continue.

The good news though - the drivers fixed the download file corruption issues I was having with steam, just managed to redownload Grim Dawn perfectly :3 Now if only I hadn't removed 2 gig's of RAM to work out why firefox keeps crashing (it's the install or flash, only crashes if flash is enabled)...
