Let's see....
- drop down to an i5-4690K then a Z97 motherboard
- please, get something other than a Hyper 212 EVO. There are other heatsinks that are just as good and better looking. don't get something everyone and their grandma owns.
- drop down to 8GB of RAM
- with that budget you should get a 500GB SSD
- get a better monitor. a 980 is absolutely wasted on 1080p60FPS gaming
- get a smaller power supply unless you plan on SLI
There will always be games that making the statement seem hopelessly naive with a bit of tweaking, modding or just time.
Good spec but something to think about...
Is that 4x4GB to take advantage of Quad Channel?
Would you consider changing to 500GB SSD and 2TB HDD for more room for games on the SSD?
quad ch ram isnt needed for gaming
a 4690k/4790k will be as good for a single gpu as a 2011-3 build
Motherboard: GIGABYTE G1.Sniper or similar Z97 (5th Gen)
Memory: 8GB or 16GB DDR3 1866MHz Crucial Ballistix Elite CL9 1.5V
Power Supply: 850W EVGA SuperNOVA (G2)
Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (128GB Samsung 850 PRO)
Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (2TB Western Digital - Black Edition)
Graphics Card(s): 2x SLI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4GB (ASUS Strix Edition or EVGA ACX 2.0+)
Display: Asus ROG SWIFT 27 inch PG278Q (G-SYNC) (144Hz Refresh) (2560 x 1440 Resolution) or Acer Predator XB270HU
You can run at 1440p (120/144Hz) with two GTX 980, even if you start off with a single one (60Hz), it will run smoothly with G-SYNC.
A single GTX 970 is enough and optimal for 1080p full settings at 60Hz, if you want to stick that that resolution.

I most likely will go with:
GTX 980 Ti SLI
Asus ROG Maximus Hero VII
Corsair AX860 (own)
i7-4790K
CAUTION. The above monitor will have a retail price of $1,299.
Peripherals: I already purchased the Logitech G502, Corsair Vengeance RGB K70 mechanical keyboard. I also own the Logitech wireless G700s and G9X.
The G9X is 3 years old so the G502 is a perfect replacement.
then when its not enough add a the 2nd 980
and get a 250g samsung evo instead of the 128g
i7 5820k 3.3GHz 6 Core
ASUS X-99-A (OC) Motherboard
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Heat Sink
16Gb Adata XPG-Z1 2400MHz DDR4
GTX 980 4Gb FTW ACX 2.0+
Samsung 850 PRO 250Gb SSD for OS Win 8.1 Pro 64bit
7200 RPM Seagate Hybrid SSHD 2Tb w/8Gb flash for gaming and programs (this is fast as hell)
LG Super Multi DVDRW
LG Blu-Ray RW
Corsair CX750Watt 80 Plus Bronze Modular
Apevia X-4 Dreamer Mid Tower with 5x120mm case fans and 1x200mm side case fan included
all this shipped and built for 1700 bux.....
With this rig I can be gaming, manually capture every game via Shadowplay at 1080p, and broadcast via OBS to Twitch without a hiccup. I also do work related things with this system that would choke the crap out of any quad, except maybe a high end Xeon.
