Need help with gaming laptop!
So I built a gaming computer about 2 years ago.

Here are the specs: - HP Envy 15.6" Laptop - AMD A10-5750M Radeon HD Graphics 2.50 GHz - Windows 8.1 64-bit - 8GB RAM

Okay heres the main problem, MY COMPUTER OVERHEATS ALL THE TIME, and then it'll shut off automatically. I like to play skyrim... a lot, which is why I got it with the AMD graphics card, and the game does run smoothly, but I didn't expect it to overheat+auto-shutdown so often, and it has gotten progressively worse over the months to the point where I have no patience to play games on that laptop anymore. I like the laptop form factor because It means I can play hardcore games like skyrim while travelling.

So heres where I need your help. Is there a laptop out there that I can build that has good enough graphics that it can play games like skyrim with high quality, and do so without overheating? or is there hardware I can install to my current pc that will solve these issues?

If this ideal computer doesn't exist then just let me know **sigh** I'll save up for a desktop...

Thanks!

Well once you get away from AMD and their ever present issues with processors that always run hotter, you should be fine.

"Built"? "Gaming computer"? Neither of those things could attributed to an HP laptop at all. That thing doesn't even have a graphics card, just an integrated GPU.

Anyway, there isn't a way to build you own laptop or to upgrade your current one. The constrained and variable form factor prevents that. Although, for your overheating issue, it can help to open the laptop up and clean out the dust.

Maybe you should just look into building your own desktop gaming PC? It's a much better value and you can find plenty of guides on how to do so through YouTube and Google. Desktop PCs are definitely cheaper than laptops for the same performance, so I don't get why you're worried about price.

Yeah I had a feeling that might be the case...

I did open it up a few days ago and used compressed air to get some dust out, but it still overheats fairly quickly. So I thought maybe some damage has already been done and the hardware needs to change.

I know I'm not very experience in this so I appreciate the advice!

Gaming laptops are cool and all, but realistically, they become obsolete sooner than a PC due to limited/cost prohibitive upgradability other than RAM.

I never said one couldn't be upgraded, I guess you didn't read the whole statement, but it is typically more expensive for parts compared to a desktop. Also Mobile GPUs are usually not as beefy as their desktop counterparts.

First off, there's the price/performance ratio. Whether you're spending $300 or $3,000, you will get a more powerful computer for your money in a desktop, if you're willing to give up portability.

You have more upgrade options with a desktop. Most laptops will let you easily add RAM and swap out the hard drive. But your average desktop can take more RAM than your average laptop. And with a desktop's multiple bays, your drive options open up considerably. For instance, you don't have to choose between an SSD and a hard drive on a laptop; you can have both. Upgrading a CPU or graphics card - a reasonably easy tasks on a desktop - is a more difficult to sometimes impossible (usually impossible) on a laptop.

Which brings up the issue of repair. It's easy to open up a desktop PC, check to make sure the cables are secure, clean out the dust, remove a broken part, and replace it with something generic. Laptop repair takes considerable skill, and many parts are specific to that model.

On the other hand, laptops are portable. That's a very good reason to buy one. They also use less electricity.
