Its likely slighly slower than a 680 but its fairly close. Its certainly not wroth 'upgrading' to unless you need something on 960s

I don't follow computer tech that much so pardon my noobness.

Can someone explain to me why GTX680 a card that is almost 3 years ago is on par with gtx960?

Shouldn't GTX960 win because newer chipset, better core speed, and better memory speed?

Because GTX 680 was high-end card when it was released and GTX 960 is only medium range card. And GTX 680 has 256-bit memory interface.
Somebody correct if i am wrong but i think that the first number tells the generation of the card. The smaller the older. Second + third numbers tells the powerful of the card (in that generation).
x50 (low) , x60, x70 (mid) , x80, x90 (high).

GTX960 is much better when comparing FPS/watt to GTX680
There is no point upgrading to GTX 960 if you already have GTX 680, you wont get any performance gain.
If you want to buy new graphics card or to replace some old weak card then GTX 960 is better option then GTX 680 because of newer features and smaller energy draw.

If you want to understand the reasons behind it, do your research... but get this: the gtx 680 is more powerful.
They are about the same in performance. But the gtx680 is much older, consumes more power and is more expensive because it's not being produced anymore.
The benefit would maybe be higher Open GL and DX12 capabilities with a 960 where a 680 isn't. Still yes, the 680 would outrun a 960 slightly.

They're up and down with in fractions of each other ^. In Dying light they tie.

There's no point in swapping it out.
I think the gtx 680 is a little bit better in effective performance, but the gtx960 is maxwell, consumes much less power and supports directx 12. The difference in performance isnt too big.
cant go wrong with new tech
I have a 650 TI and I thinking it's time for an upgrade. So should I buy a 680 or a 960? Halp.

Probably too late now, but a 960.
Way to revive a dead thread..

But for the record, a 680 is SLIGHTLY and i mean SLIGHTLY better than a 960
But overall the 960 is better, especially in 4GB form.
gtx 680 was a high end gpu
gtx 960 is mid at best

when upgrading gpus, try to go better on the grade
to a 980 would be a huge improvement
