Regular monitor vs Gaming monitor
My current monitor is starting to fail.
How bad would FPS / racing game performance be on this monitor ?
ViewSonic VA2703[www.newegg.com]
I am trying to figure out if I play enough action games that I should be using a gaming monitor with better specs.

The response time on this monitor is a bit slow. Gaming monitors should have 1ms response time. I don't think it matters for racing games, but first person shooters really benefit from it.

Also it's a bit too big for 1920x1080 resolution. I myself have a 23 inch monitor with the same 1920x1080 resolution and i do see pixels if i move my head closer to the screen. But with 27 inch it will be quite a bit worse.

I would say for a 27 inch screen you need at least 1440p (2560x1440) to have a sharp image.

Go with this 144 Hz monitor instead if you want true gaming monitor:

Up to you if you prefer IPS's better contrast, colors and viewing angles, or TN's fast response time and high refresh rates.
If you're going 27" step up to 1440p. Otherwise stick to 24".

Obviously, I don't know what I am missing in a gaming monitor. This is what I currently have:

Going from 28 to 24 will be painful.

28in 1920x1080 monitor has large pixels, (.3mm)

a 22-24in 1920x1080 monitor would have smaller pixels (.27mm) and look sharper

5ms and under for 60hz is fine
for a 120-240hz monitor, you need 2ms or lower
