Black Screen When Accessing BIOS Z97-K
Hey Guys,

I built my PC back in June and it has been running great, save some quirky issues with the BIOS when attempting to change settings.

I have noticed recently that when restarting my computer, the ASUS splash screen was no longer displaying; the monitor (despite indicating that it was receiving a signal) would remain black until windows booted.

I restarted again, now trying to access BIOS by holding on to delete as usual. However, the screen stays completely black (monitor saying there IS a signal) and now I cannot restart to even show windows as it was before.

I have tried a few things so far including clearing the CMOS, unseating and reseating both the GPU and motherboard battery, and removing the gpu and plugging the hdmi card into the motherboard hmdi. Still nothing but a black screen with the monitor claiming that there is a signal.

I would greatly appreciate anyone's opinion!

SPECS:

ASUS Z97-K Motherboard
Intel 4670K 3.4GHZ
EVGA GeForce GTX 770 Superclocked 2048MB
8 GB Crucial Ballistix Sport XT DDR3-1866

Remove the power cord, remove the battery and then clear cmos hold the cap on pins 2-3 for about 10 seconds or so. then replace cap on pins 1-2, replace the battery, power cord and re-enter bios to make any required changes.

If the above does get you into bios you may want to check the bios version and update if a newer one is available.

If you don't have a manual download one when you can.

you do not need to remove the battery and power cord to reset bios
just jumper the pins for clrtc for a few seconds
its near the sata ports on the asus z97-k

You do if the normal method of resetting bios fails, as he said he has already tried it i thought it may not have worked.

Thanks for the replies guys. I had already cleared cmos using both methods, but I did it again for grins, but still nothing. Interestingly, I plugged the pc into my TV and I had a display - a message from BIOS that my SMART failed and I should consider replacing my hard drive (I have gotten this message since day 1 but the drive has been fine and I have tested it etc etc.

So, I take the PC back to my computer monitor, and no display again. However, now knowing that the prompt is F1, I hit F1 and suddenly I have the screen back. I cannot figure out why it would just not show one specific screen?!

I am thinking that I will now need to either update the BIOS or reformat? This all began with troubles with this BIOS and attempting to overclock (even using the software on the BIOS EZTune resulted in blue screen. Anyone else having these types of quirks with the Z97 boards?

I should add that I am now initially getting an error when logging on which states that:
"Appdata/Local/Temp/025920Log.iniis lost"

if you can get it to windows, check the smart table with hdtune trial

http://www.hdtune.com/download.html
health tab -> data column is the current value
if current pending sectors, or reallocated sectors are more than 0, the drive is going bad

I have one SSD and one 7200 WD Hard Drive. Both have a 0 in the Data column for (05) Reallocated Sector Count and (C5) Current Pending Sectors. The SMART issue is really just one aspect of the problems with the board so I am wondering if the board itself is faulty. There is also the error message I listed above when I initially log on, this weird display issue, and the inability to use EZTuner without getting a blue screen.

As it stands, I have updated the BIOS to the most recent version and turned FastBoot off. But now I have to clear CMOS every time I restart the computer or there will be no display.

Reflashed the BIOS - all is well so long as I do not restart. If I restart then I have to clear CMOS...never had this type of issue before. Should I consider replacing the board?

That may explain everything. There is probably an overclock profile that is being applied when you boot into Windows. Once that is being written to the BIOS, you are not able to boot properly again. Try to disable that ASUS overclock utility.

The second issue regarding that log file may be resolved with this thread info

i think the thread starter enabled fast boot in the BIOS.
i have seen this feature on an MSI B85 mobo.

I cannot figure out why it would just not show one specific screen?!
switch video ports/cables to rule out defective cables/ports...
i.e. : try using hdmi instead of dvi or vice versa.
