for the price of the s, you can get a 4460 or 4440, which are clocked higher
It would still outperform a AMD FX-6300 Six-Core.
However, a Intel Core i7-2600K @ 3.40GHz could beat it.
(Note: That is for certain games only, requiring more from the CPU)
Games bottleneck via the 6 cores on the AMD.
However, Intel has next generations ( 2nd Sandy / 3rd Ivy / 4th Haswell ) which make the motherboard work with the CPU - so more direct access to memory and graphics processing. Since, it's a 4th Gen Haswell, it will still excel in some other areas.
"S" editions are for environment friendly office people who prefer to use less energy at the cost of greater performance.
"K" editions are unlocked for overclockers, who just don't give a d@mn about no stinky environment as they are creating a new virtual one.
If there's nothing, then it's a standard locked model.
Most games will make more use of a high-end Graphics Card, caring less about the CPU. However, depending of the game, for example Battlefield 4, the CPU processor can also have a major part.
Memory is optimal around 1600MHz / 1866MHz - CL9 - 1.5V
If your looking to upgrade, work with better graphics card first...
Suggest: Nvidia GTX 970
Depending on what you got now, that will be the biggest area of improvement.
Then if replacing the CPU, make it a worth while upgrade, such as to the Intel Core i7-4770K (Haswell) Processor. Even though games are optimal to run on i5, i7 includes hyperthreading as well, which helps with multi-tasking, etc. It still can come into play as a gamer - for example if you steaming your gameplay and then editing it for youtube, etc.
Also consider a encapulated liquid cooler for the CPU or large heatsink fan CPU Cooler, such as the Noctua NH-D14. Why? Because if you are going to rip out the old CPU, you might as well make it worth while the effort and work around it. Use high quality thermal paste for replacement such as Arctic Silver 5 or if some good stuff already comes with the CPU Cooler. That way it's cooler, quieter, and much more faster for gaming upon.
