friends computer psu blew up and now sata drives not recognizable.
ok so just to clarify from the start that this was not my build and I would never put a 400 watt generic brand psu into a pc that needs a 650 watt minumum psu into one of my builds. So what he told me was that his psu stopped working and that smoke started to come out of it. btw he has a gtx 470 [ 550 watt min]. anyway when he replaced his psu with a new 700 watt psu, all his hard drives and also his dvd drive was not regognized in the bios of his motherboard. what could this be??? Idk if he just didn't connect the sata power connector into the sata devices or if the sata female ports on the mobo are bad? He asked me if I know what a sata port is so maybe the problem is on his side with not connecting the power into the sata devices... If any of you guys know if this is common for sata ports to go out on a mobo please tell me. thanks

It's very likely that the SATA power connectors weren't plugged in. It seems extremely unlikely that all sata ports or all drives would fail at once.

there are lots of possiblities:
1. when the old psu blew up, it also took the mobo with it.
2. when the old psu blew up, it also took other components.
3. the new psu is dead.
4. the new psu is not properly connected to the 'working' motherboard.
5. sata and power cables not properly attached.

i suggest you list complete specifications of all the components of the pc plus the brand/model of the old and new psu.

take several pictures of the computer (inside pc chassis, specially connections to mobo like 20+4 main power connector, 4(+4) auxilliary power connector, sata and ppower connector to hdd, etc), upload them to imgur, and post the individual imgur links so we can see if there are obvious defects in the assembly.
Can you test the hard drives on another computer?

Generally when a PSU blows like that, it takes something else with it.

Best bet to narrow it down would be to test the HDDs on another working system.
But yea it is not uncommon when a PSU fails in a really bad way like this, as SSDs/HDDs are very sensitive or voltage changes or surges.

yea i will have him take some pics later next weekend because the computer is over at his fathers. i could probably fix the problem if he had the computer here in the town that I am in.

yea he said the drives worked on his dads computer. specifically the dvd drive

power supply that explode can damage computer parts. might have damage the ports in the motherboard.

try run the pc with 1 hdd no dvd drive no graphics card(hopefully itll have onboard graphics),so you minimise power usage see if it fires up, check all connections before you power up,if he can watch a few youtube clips or vids to get an idea of whats hes doing, thinking bout it - it doesnt need the hdd to test it to bios, but if u wana test the hdd then your need to plug that in at sum point when its powerd off

if it works in other computer, then try to use another 'working' sata cable. use one sata port at a time. (rule out defective sata cable, defective sata port on mobo)
