Ultrawide monitor through AVS receiver
I run my PC HDMI through a receiver then to the monitor to get 7.1 surround sound. I just upgraded to an ultrawide monitor (LG 34 inch 2560x1080). But my receiver does not handle anything above 1920x1080. I am looking at a new 4K capable receiver, but 4K is not the same thing as ultrawide. Yes, 4K is more than 2560X1080, but f the receiver is not programmed to support 2560X1080 then it still may not work. I tried looking at the online manuals, but they do not list the resolutions that are supported.

Can anyone confirm using an ultrawide monitor through a receiver?
Has anyone used some kind of HDMI splitter to send video to a monitor and audio to a receiver?

UPDATE: Just in case this might be useful to someone else. I tried a new 4K receiver with this monitor. An Onkyo 636 that supports HDCP 2.2, 4K and all the latest stuff. The Friggin receiver would not connect to this ultrawide monitor at all. Nothing. It works fine with my standard 1080P monitor but just does not "see" the ultawide monitor at all. My best wild guess is that there is an internal table of allowable configurations and ultrawide is not included.

Why use the receiver for video? Plug your monitor straight into the GPU, use optical or usb for audio.

^ This

You are just limiting yourself when u don't need to. No reason to use the receiver in the manner u are currently. In fact, the receiver can add further delays to your video signal as well.

Best bet is using DVI or DisplayPort directly from Display to GPU. For Audio from PC to Receiver+Speakers, u can do that a number of ways.

That is what I wanted to do but optical output only supports 5.1 audio. And I have a full 7.1 setup for my main TV so that is what I want to use. Thanks to the movie industry they did not allow the optical standard to be updated. They force you to use HDMI for 7.1. Suprisingly to me, most game are in 7.1.

I haven't tested this, but can you run video through the monitor with Displayport or DVI, and audio through HDMI to the receiver?

Use DP to monitor as HDMI on that monitor may limit you to 30 fps. Use the HDMI out to your receiver for the sound. Just go to settings and duplicate your display.

You should be able to still use HDMI without any use of Video off of that, to run from the GPU to your Receiver for your Sound if needed. Once hooked up and all with active signals at both sides, you should be able to just set the HDMI Audio Output as your Default Playback Device in Windows and still be able to do Video Out via DVI or DP.

I need a new video card next. I do not have DP now, just DVI and HDMI. I cant just duplicate the displays because the receiver is seen as 1920X1080 and the monitor is seen as 2560X1080. Unless there IS some way to still do that. Bad-Motha, I have tried to use DVI to the monitor and HDMI to the receiver, but as soon as I connect the HDMI cable to the video card I lose signal to the monitor. There may be some way to config windows (Win 7) to do it but I have not been able to figure it out. The receiver is seen as a second monitor and i do not know if that can be disabled.

Some HDMI are shared with 1x DVI
Does your GPU have 2x DVI ports? If so try the other DVI port.

Also try the following method. Power off the PC, connect the HDMI to Receiver and DVI to Monitor. Power on the Receiver and Monitor first, then the PC and see how it does. The picture MIGHT go out and/or flicker when entering Windows, allow it time to fully reach/load the Desktop and see how it does. Sometimes it can work out differently when done this way, as opposed to hot-plugging.

Update: I got things working now by using DVI to the monitor and HDMI to the receiver. The "trick" I had to use was to temp attach my old monitor to the receiver so that Windows had two monitors at once attached. Then I chose the DVI monitor as the primary. It was defaulting to the HDMI connection as primary.

Once doing this, setting the DVI connection (Display shown in Windows) as #1 default should fix this, correct?

Yes., all works OK. I can shut off everything and then when I power up the DVI goes to the monitor and the HDMI goes to the receiver. But, since I use other computers and devices to display at this monitor, I had to buy a stand alone HDMI switch because I have to run the video straight to the moniter. I cannot use the receiver for switching video sources anymore.

sorry for asking, i got same issue. The problem is I'm using displayport. I chose Displayport monitor as the primary, worked fine as long as there are 2 monitors connected. If i unplug the HDMI computer, the displayport monitor turn black again. Do i have to use 2 monitors for this receiver connection?

Wow, You dug up a very old thread from 2 years ago. I am not sure about your question, but the problem might be which monitor displayport or hdmi is set to be primary. Your case would have to have the displayport as primary. My setup is stable now with the DVI to the monitor and the hdmi to the receiver. If I forget to turn on the receiver then it still works ok with the sound switching to the monitor (which has its own speakers).

@out of bubblegum, i'm sorry to bump this but i have (had) the same problem and followed your solution and now my same problem is gone. You, Sir, are my new hero... ;) I also have a Onkyo and connected my videocard to it with hdmi and then hdmi to dvi cable to my monitor. And i want to buy a 34" monitor with 3440x1440 resolution and 100 hz. My receiver could handle 4K/60hz and then you would think that the hdmi on this thing would be 2.0 and all is good... Wrong. i had contact with Onkyo Asia and they were very helpful i must say but i did not like the answer:

Regarding your question, HT-R494 is supported 4K/60Hz video signal. But This model is HDMI1.4.
So, Although this model is officially HDMI 1.4, it can also be said to be HDMI 2.0 Level B.
The HDMI2.0 Level B is able to use HDMI 1.4 bandwidth (10.2GB). In this situation, The color depth is YUV 4:2:0 8bit only.

HDMI 2.0 Level B is not HDMI 2.0b.
HDMI 2.0 has 2 type bandwidth.
HDMI 2.0 Level A (18Gbps), and HDMI 2.0 Level B (10.2Gbps, same as HDMI1.4 bandwidth).
HDMI 2.0a and 2.0b are based on HDMI 2.0 Level A.

After this i found your topic here and followed your solution. As i'm writing this i just tested, i don't have my 34" monitor yet. But the main problem was always when i connected the monitor directly to the videocard and a hdmi to the receiver, windows always shows 2 monitors, if i disconnect the onkyo there would be no sound. So i took a second monitor with a lower resolution (1680x1050) then my main (1920x1080) to test it out. I hooked it up on the hdmi out of the onkyo and my main monitor directly to the videocard. When i booted the second monitor was indeed chosen as the primary on default. I made my main monitor the primary one. When i disconnected the second i still had image and sound but there were still 2 monitors and my mouse was dissappearing in a black hole on the right side of the screen so i had to clone it.
Now this is useful information for everybody with the same issue:
when the second monitor is connected and i try to clone my main monitor (now primary) with the second monitor with a lower resolution, it does not allow me to do it because the source resolution is higher. But when i pull the hdmi out of the second monitor and try to clone again, windows is not seeing a resolution behind it anymore and i can clone the screens!
When i restart the computer everything is still working. I'm so relieved now...

Hello there - From the distant past, or maybe the future. I dunno. Reguarding your cloning - not sure if that is a good idea. I do have the mouse dissapearing, like you have, but that does not bother me. Just keep moving the mouse left and it will come back. But cloning the screen 'might' cause a performance hit. Extra work for the video card. No idea if true, I just assume it would make more work. You should run some tests. Another problem with the 'dual screens' happened a couple of times. Somehow a window will end up on the receivers 'screen' and i have to work to get it back. So, cloning will prevent that. I guess I wll have to run some FPS tests too.
