still as good as any current fx cpu for gaming
it beats the aii x3 all the way around
on a new build, look at the pentium g, i3, i5
Okay thanks, the PC is only aiming for around 60FPS on basic games (CS:GO, GMod, Borderlands 2 etc.) so I'm guessing this CPU should do just fine. I'm paring it up with a 750Ti just incase you're wondering :)

If the CPU is used yes the Phenom II x4 965 is pretty good.
Do you already have these cpus or buying used?
If you're buying new the FX6300 is the better option.
Why not just go full size Motherboard?
then add a 212evo and 2x4g ram kit for under $80
for gaming it will run circles around the fx6 or pii x4
instead of the gtx750ti, get an r9 270
same price and better performance (if the power supply is 500+w)
I dunno... I feel like I've been saying this a lot lately, but I'll say it again... I don't think the G3258 is a very good recommendation over an FX.
There's no denying it offers incredible performance in older single-threaded programs (especially for the price), and it overclocks like a champ.
But the bottom line is it's still a budget dual-core CPU, and it's being rapidly left in the dust as more and more games are requiring multi-core support to even run.
For instance, it can't even run GTA V at 1080p/Very HIgh settings,[www.gamersnexus.net] yet an Athlon 760K handles it just fine.
So don't get me wrong... the G3258 is awesome for what you pay for it... but to claim it "runs circles" around the FX-series is being just a tad bit disingenuous.
Yes, I know it does.
I think you missed my point.
I never said that GTA V won't run on a dual core CPU.
I said the 760K can run it better than the G3528 which supposedly "runs circles" around a FX.
why spend $60 on a game and $50-60 on a cpu to run it?
for older and last gen games g3258 overclocked to 4-4.5 will beat fx
Thanks for the clarification.
Still seems to me like an odd recommendation to make.
Considering my Phenom II 965 runs older titles maxed at 60fps no problem.
And it can also run GTA V at High settings... (not well, but it's playable)
So what's the advantage of going for a G3258 that's strong in older titles but fails in newer ones?
[edit] Apart from the upgrade path, that is.... meaning you can easily replace it with the i5 you should have bought to begin with.
also much newer tech that can easily be upgraded to i5 4440-4790
BTW, look at AMD Q1 financial results - its disastrous. As usual.
