Cleaning up the system
When I open windows task manager, I have discovered a wide variety of services that im not sure whether they should or shouldn't be there... the question is which services, processes and programs are vital to the Windows system and which are uselss?

Note my computer is used by other people so security is vital.

(I'm looking for a general list of programmes, services and processes, I've already removed two search bars (google and bing) because I normally use them directly.)

post a series of screenshots showing programs in task manager (processes tab under win 8x)

some programs are best left alone like antivirus.
some programs can be safely disabled to run at startup like adobe updater, google updater, media up like zoner photo studio, windows live

Windows Services For Windows 7:

Unlike older versions of Windows, Windows 7 with SP1 actually does a fairly good job of setting up the services list on its own however there are several items that can be changed to further improve the performance of the system. To make this easy I am providing a list that should be safe for just about anyone to use. If you happen to see something specific you know you need to run but is set to disabled in the list below, leave it enabled on your system.

VERY IMPORTANT: Shutting down services past what I display below is NOT NECESSARY. Windows 7 will not run any better by shutting down nearly every service in the list. Please do not shut down services based on ‘Black Viper’ or any other tweak site or program recommendation, furthermore there is NO reason to use the software AlacrityPC, (which had a useful purpose years ago), or GAMEBOOSTER which has the real potential to make the system run WORSE under certain criteria.

Most of the services below are safely set to MANUAL which will START only if they are needed automatically, and, the services that MUST be enabled are enabled for a reason. Do not deviate from this list unless you know exactly what you are doing.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

If you see a item on your system that DOES NOT appear on the list below, unless you know exactly what it is and what it does, leave it alone.

If you see an item on this list that you do not see listed on your system, skip it.

You will find that many of these services are already configured correctly and need no change, as I said, Windows 7 does a fairly good job of optimizing itself. Going past these settings and disabling more than what is listed is NOT REQUIRED and in some cases can make the system run worse! Some of them are needed to properly configure the Windows prefetch boot system correctly which will be done in the next steps after the services are configured and many of them switch themselves ON and OFF correctly by demand and use.
1. Go to START – Administrator Tools – Services. Expand the screen and then expand the name column so you can see the service name and the startup type. You can collapse the status and description columns so its easier to see the name next to the startup type listed.

2. To change a service “Startup Type” simply select the service in your services list, right click and select PROPERTIES. In the STARTUP TYPE box change the service to the startup type to what is shown in the list below and click APPLY. Close the box and go to the next service in the list.

NOTE: Unlike Windows XP when a services is shut down it does NOT require the ‘login type’ be changed, only switch the service Startup type and click apply.

SET THE FOLLOWING SERVICES TO STARTUP TYPE: MANUAL
Windows 7 is different from Windows versions of the past. A service set to MANUAL will not invoke ANY resource reduction or performance issues and they are designed to start on their own if the demand for them is required. DO NOT shut down a service that is defined to start manually as that will make no difference to the system and if your system needs one of these items it should start on its own!

SET THE FOLLOWING SERVICES TO STARTUP TYPE: DISABLED

Adobe Acrobat Update Service - This can be shut down and you should set this in the Adobe Acrobat settings to NEVER UPDATE. You can still update MANUALLY
Adaptive Brightness
BitLocker Drive Encryption Service

-------------------------------

Google Update Service (gupdate)
Google Update Service (gupdatem)

You don't want Google updating your system and running in the background.. Shut these 2 services down if they are present.

Important update information about disabling Google Update services and the slick background activity GOOGLE adds to your system which sends them usage tracks!

Google has changed how these services work and WILL re-enable them by default as soon as you REBOOT. At one time you could simply shut them down but now in order to kill them properly Google made this a lot more difficult so they can so call "update" your software and we all should know by now that Google makes their money through USER TRACKING data.

If you use Google Earth or other Google software these services allow Google to do their dirty work. You don't need this nonsense on your system and running in the background. To shut it down properly do the following:

1. Once you have installed any/all Google software you may use and have DISABLED these 2 services in the Services lint, navigate to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Update\1.3.21.149 <--- there will be a directory with a number as shown in the example, this number MAY be different on your system, open that numbered directory

2. RENAME all these files with a OLD extension (.old) as shown

GoogleCrashHandler.exe.old
GoogleCrashHandler64.exe.old
GoogleUpdate.exe.old
GoogleUpdateBroker.exe.old
GoogleUpdateHelper.msi.old
GoogleUpdateOnDemand.exe.old
GoogleUpdateSetup.exe.old

Gotta love it! All that nonsense being run at once from those services when you boot your computer!

Once those items have been renamed, close the directory.

3. Start the Windows TASK SCHEDULER. Click START and in the box type: Task Scheduler and in the top box click the Task Scheduler and open it. Click on TASK SCHEDULER LIBRARY

4. Right click the 2 Google Tasks in the left pane and select DISABLE for BOTH

5. Close the Task Scheduler.. DONE! Google is now no longer into anything on your system in the way of usage tracking or updating.

HomeGroup Listener - NOTE: IF YOU USE HOMEGROUP FOR NETWORKING DO NOT DISABLE THIS SERVICE
HomeGroup Provider - NOTE: IF YOU USE HOMEGROUP FOR NETWORKING DO NOT DISABLE THIS SERVICE

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) - This is only needed if you use one computer on a network to connect to the internet and all other computers use the base computer to reach the internet as well. It is RARE to need this service as a typical network or system will not use this feature.

MBAMScheduler
MBAMService

MALWAREBYTES: These 2 services are NOT needed since there is no reason to run Malwarebytes in the background. This will NOT block updating or using Malwarebytes!.

Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v2.0.50727_X64
Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v2.0.50727_X86

NOTE: These NET 2 items should be disabled if Windows has been correctly updated. Net 4 will install automatically with Windows Update and Windows Update will correctly shut down Net 2 and enable Net 4. NET 2 is handled by NET 4 which automatically starts with Windows

Net.Msmq Listener Adapter
Net.Pipe Listener Adapter
Net.Tcp Listener Adapter
Net.Tcp Port Sharing Service
Offline Files
Performance Counter DLL Host
Performance Logs & Alerts
Program Compatibility Assistant Service
Remote Registry
Routing and Remote Access
Tablet PC Input Service
Windows Defender - VERY IMPORTANT this is shut down as Windows Defender is nothing but resource hog and a performance killer
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
Windows Media Center Receiver Service

THE FOLLOWING SERVICES SHOULD BE SET TO STARTUP TYPE: AUTOMATIC (DELAY START)

Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology

Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X64
Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X86

NOTE: If you do not see NET 4 in this list and instead see NET 2 then you have not updated Windows properly through Windows Update. These 2 items will appear automatically when Windows update upgrades your NET system. They must remain set to Automatic (Delay Start)

PnP-X IP Bus Enumerator
Security Center
Software Protection
Windows Search
Windows Update

THE FOLLOWING SERVICES SHOULD BE SET TO STARTUP TYPE: AUTOMATIC

Application Host Helper Service
Base Filtering Engine
COM+ Event System
Cryptographic Services
DCOM Server Process Launcher
Desktop Window Manager Session Manager
DHCP Client
Diagnostic Policy Service
Distributed Link Tracking Client
DNS Client

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
RPC Endpoint Mapper
Security Accounts Manager
Sentinel HASP License Manager
Server

Superfetch Please make sure this service is set to AUTOMATIC start even with SSD.. I will explain this service and SSD under STEP 23
System Event Notification Service
Task Scheduler
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Themes
User Profile Service
Windows Audio
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
Windows Event Log
Windows Firewall
Windows Font Cache Service
Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant
Windows Management Instrumentation

Workstation

Verify your list. An easy way to do this is to place the mouse pointer over the STARTUP TYPE header at the top of the services list and click it until the list organizes with all the MANUAL settings listed first, the DISABLED settings listed 2nd, Automatic (Delay Start), and finally Automatic .... then expand the NAME column so they all appear in full, close the STATUS and DESCRIPTION columns by dragging the header border with the mouse.

You will now have 2 columns, NAME and STARTUP TYPE organized in the same order as the list posted above.

Go back and go down the list posted above which is in the same order as yours and verify your list is the same.

Once complete, close the Services window.

ADDITIONAL: Here is a little feature that MAY or MAY NOT be enabled by default on your version of Windows. Its the Windows Media CENTER and its not needed unless you use your system for advanced Windows Media features for items such as home cinema. To disable this, START - CONTROL PANEL on the side click "Turn Windows Features on or off". In the box that appears scroll down and expand the MEDIA FEATURES and uncheck: Windows Media Center, click OK and allow the system to disable the feature. A reboot may be requested, do so if requested.

What is the issue about those two?
That is simply for Update Service for Google Chrome. Has nothing to do with "Google Toolbar"

Google Chrome has a Setting in there for "Don't allow Google Background Apps to run after Browser exit" < this is what u want. Then it's services won't matter. At any time u can manually check for Chrome Updates by two methods for two reasons. Settings > Extension > put in Dev Mode there and then u have an Update button for updating your installed extensions. For updating Chrome you go to Settings > About and it will then check for Chrome Browser Updates.

...The concept is to "shut down" as many services as possible. If you want Chrome to update automatically that is your choice. For the purposes of keeping your browser as secure as possible I can understand your concern, however, I have found that a good AV/firewall and manually updating common programs/services on a, shall we say, 3 month cycle is adequate.
Not everyone uses Chrome.

But u also have to consider that even if a Service it set to something where it could potentially be enabled; i.e. Manual or Auto. It's not using any resources if it's Not Running. If you go applying Disable to many of them u really are not sure of, it may hinder various OS features from working properly.

A better means of looking through Startup & Task Scheduled events/tasks is to perhaps use CCleaner. Which gives easy access to Startup, Browser Plugins, Task Scheduler and an easy way to Enable, Disable, as well as Delete listed things in such areas. It also gives an easy break-down listing of individual System Restore Points, allowing u to just delete certain ones, if needed. Good for when u do not wish to wipe all of them in one go.

Couple things I've gotten used to changing under Win7 are these:

- Disable Superfetch (when using an SSD for OS)

- Disable Disk Defrag's AUTO feature; and if u install any 3rd party ones, don't setup their Scheduling either.

- Disable the Remote Connect Service capabilities if you do not plan or using any Peer-to-Peer or Windows Remote Assistance

- On a trusted Network, set your place on all Networked machines to Work rather than Home. As Home will allow for HomeGroup, something you do not need. Work uses the Easy-Sharing, like XP allowed for. Thus you can now go ahead and Disable the HomeGroup Services too.

- Disable Windows Media Player Broadcast Sharing; as this requires HomeGroup.

- Disable Windows Defender; to avoid Windows Updates getting Definition Updates for that plus it won't be needed once you install a real-time Anti-Virus/Malware suite anyways.

- Disable Hiberation; done through Command Prompt; powercfg -h off ~ This disables the feature and also removes the Hibernation related Temp file that saves you quite a bit of space, good for SSD users. Since you already boot so fast, Hibernation really isn't needed.

- Disable PageFile by setting to None and Apply, then Reboot to rid the system of it's Temp file. Then set it again, but this time to one of your HDDs, and apply the same Min/Max size to avoid fragmentation due to the file changing sizes over time. Min/Max of 4096 is plenty.

- Lower the size allowed for Recycle Bin via it's Properties.

- Lower the size allowed for System Restore, but be reasonable. 8-12 GB worth should be sufficient. Lower sizes means Windows Updates may take alot longer, due to the further compression that must be done for Restore Points when the size is set too low. When the system has been stable for quite some time, delete all the Restore Points to free space, then manually make your own Restore Point and give it a Unique name so you can better identify that when/if u ever need it.

- Do not defrag any SSDs or Flash based media. It's not needed and will just shorten it's life by adding to it's total yield of reads/writes. However don't forget to defrag your mechanical HDDs, as those will still need it and benefit from it over time. Based on how often u install/uninstall things to those. For example, lets say you install a fairly large (multiple GB is size, as is typical) game to your HDD, after install, verify it, but before you play, defrag it so it can better handle reads/writes more efficiently. Auslogics Disk Defrag is good for a fairly quick defrag + optimize of the files.

- Set Power Profile on all Windows OS to High Performance on higher-end Work or Gaming setups. But also it can help to edit that one, then modify the HDD Sleep Timer to something more suitable if you have apps/games installed to Drives other then C drive. The default is 20 mins. Often times u see people complaining they loaded up Steam Client and it's not seeing ALL their games (being as they have installed some of other drives). It's usually because the drive was asleep when Steam started up, thus it can't see that data just yet. Wakeup your Drives u have installed apps on before launching such software that's going to use data off those drives.
