What is the difference between an i7 hq cpu and an i7 mq cpu?
buying a custom laptop, just want to know the difference and which type allows for upgrading later on

Laptop = Not upgradeable ~ aside from maybe RAM and Drive(s)
So get the best CPU & GPU u can within allowable budget.

Compare here:
http://ark.intel.com/products/family/75023/4th-Generation-Intel-Core-i7-Processors#@Mobile

Basically for the higher-end i7 class
MQ still have the Intel HD 4000 series GPU
HQ have the newer, faster Intel Iris Pro series GPU

you can look up the cpu model
if its a bga its soldered to the board
lga is in a socket

Not same at all, Iris Pro is a huge step forward for Onboard GPU.

But again if you are getting a "Gaming" laptop that shouldn't even matter, cause your dedicated GPU should matter more, preferably NVIDIA 860/960 minimum

Just get the highest GHz CPU u can. As that will help.

The one I am looking at has mq style cpu, so it is socketed? This is good news, as it is possible to upgrade :D

Bad-Motha, you're just partly wrong.

Not all HQ models have the Iris Pro.

Primarily the difference is that MQ are socketed, while HQ are soldered. But some HQ models still have HD4x00 series Intel GPUs, for example my own i7 4700HQ.

Not quite, get the highest clocked quad core CPU don't worry about Hyperthreading for a gaming system it doesn't do much to help out a dual core.

Iris Pro 5200 is on Par with NVidia GT640M.

Upgradable or not? It depends, bigger laptops use MXM GPUs and socketed CPUs and RAM which are upgradeable. Thin, light notebooks use soldered components that can't be upgraded.

This is the one the laptop comes with, upgradable to better

4th Generation Intel® Haswell Core™ i7-4710MQ (2.5GHz - 3.5GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache)

upgradable to better with higher clock speed but price is not worth it to be honest an extra 200 dollars for a 2.8ghz compared to the 2.5ghz

That's reasonable, if the Laptop comes with a decent NVIDIA GPU you are fine. If you are relying on the Intel GPU it may be worth upgrading to one with the Intel 5200 instead of the 4600 on the 4710.

yea NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 970M (3.0GB) GDDR5 PCI-Express DX11 (Maxwell) w/ Optimus™ Technology

Which one should I go for MQ (Socketed) or HQ (Soldered)
