DVD RW Drive seems incredibly slow to install my game.
Not sure if this is the right place to post this question but i'm just installing Disc 1 of The Witcher 3. First time installing a physical copy of a game.

Disc 1 looks to be around 8GB yet i've been sitting here for the last half an hour and it's only about 33% done with 45 minutes remaining.

Why do i get the feeling i'm downloading the game?

Manufactures say about 40GB install

what game?

it may not be the odd drive speed, but also if the data is highly compressed it will use the cpu to uncompress and could also be partially the hdd
as data needs to be read from odd -> uncompressed -> written to hdd
some games use temp file locations and they are copied to the hdd multiple times during the install process
a slow hdd can doulbe the install time

Ah ok. I'm gunna pretend i understood all that. Disc 1 seemed to be the slowest but the whole game (The Witcher 3) took i would say around an hour. I just expected games on disc to be installed faster than i can chuck in the next disc.

Just activate the provided key that came with Witcher3 into your Steam Account. Then download the game. Unless your ISP is slower than 7-10mbps, the online download would probably be faster.

The DVDs for that game are 8.5GB each, and it still has to uncompress all that data during the install, so it is REALLY slow.

I would not buy a physical game copy if it requires a game client. As that usually means the disc is useless anyways. As even after you install a game this way (which BTW DVD transfer is quite slow when it's multiple DVDs for a game) once finished, the game client will most likely need to download further patch updates for your game. Use the game code and download the game via game client. That way it will usually be faster overall, and you'll get the most recent game version right away.

Pretty much what you said is what happened. But i decided to buy physically just because my net is pretty poor and would take a day and a half or so flat to download. I was just surprised as a person new-ish to PC how long it took to install. The patch was only like 1GB so it wasn't too bad. At least i know for the future now what to expect

Cheers guys

Well back in the day when games were 1x DVD it wasn't so bad. But yea any physical copy PC games today will take a long time to install. For one, disc switching, and two, even with the multiple DVDs the game is usually even larger than that amount of data combined, meaning that data is going through de-compression stages during the installer, hence why the install is even longer than it could be if not compressed so much.

I remember the last disc based game I installed, it was Fallout 3 GOTY, disc 1 installed fine but disc 2 containing all the DLC, was uncompressed. As such instead of a few large files to copy over there were thousands, if not tens of thousands of files that had to be copied over and while the main game installed in 5 ~10 mins, the DLC on disc 2 took 10 ~ 12 hours to install.

if you are installing from disk try downloading it from steam.

Arkham Knight's download is ~55GB anyways. It will take forever on DVD and if you have crappy internet speeds.
