New PC Build Problems - Any advice would be appreciated!
Hi guys,

Slight issue with the new build and i'm totally stumped!

Case: Cooler Master Storm - Trooper
Motherboard - Gigabyte X99-UD3 Motherboard
CPU - Intel Core i7 5820K
GFX Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0 4GB
RAM: Crucial CT4K4G4DFS8213 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4
PSU: CoolerMaster V850 80 Plus Gold 850W Power Supply
HDD: SSD Mounted 64GB (to be used for Win 8 Only
HDD: Seagate Barracudas x 4 3GB
Optical: LG CH12NS30 12X BD-R Blu-Ray DVD Combo Drive
Bay Device: NZXT Aperture M Multimedia Hub

When booting the new build, the following occurs:
Power On
Optical Drive Spins up
All Fans (CPU and Case) spin up
PC Speaker single Beep
Shut Down
(Total time approx 20-24 seconds)
Pattern repeats automatically unless switched off at the PSU.
With monitor plugged in, no signal is received by the monitor prior to auto shut down.

CPU has been tested at store and found to be non-faulty.
PSU successfully powers another Computer
GFX Card works in another Computer
(unable to swap out Ram with other PC's, as they are DDR3)

I have attempted the most basic of configurations, and I have attempted the basic system configuration.
Motherboard 24 pin Power connected
Motherboard 8 pin power connected
1 stick of RAM in allocated slot (determined by motherboard manual - also been tried with all 4 seperately)
CPU cooler connected (thermal paste, screwed down, fans plugged in)
NIL case fans plugged in (i have also tried this with case fans plugged in)
Graphics Card Installed with both power connections to PSU (this has been tried with nil GFX Card as well)
Tried with Optical Drive, and SSD HD connected, and attempted without either connected.
Attempted with Case USB 3 internal connection connected, and dis-connected.

Totally lost - any thoughts on what the issue is?

Thanks in advance,

I read that you tried one stick in each memory slot, did you do this once with just one stick of memory? If so try a different stick and see what happens. Would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥ luck if you went to this trouble and turned out you have a dead stick or ram, and I say this because I had a stick of ram die and it constantly rebooted like you describe, popped out both and used the dead one to test the board. What is the LED debug codes reading? I found a site and figured out my issue by reading the codes: http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/39229-gigabyte-award-x58-bios-led-debug-codes.html best of luck to ya!

do you have a spare quality psu like seasonic M12II 600w+ ?

it looks like you already did basic power troubleshooting:
check main atx power connector (20+4pin), done.
check auxiliary power connector (4+4pin), done.
one memory module one at a time, done.

check timing of ddr4 at BIOS?

swap gpu so you could see some BIOS settings?

Graphics Card Installed with both power connections to PSU (this has been tried with nil GFX Card as well)
how did you test 'nil' gpu when i7-5920k has no built-in gpu?

Hey Matty - Re: memory testing, i tried all 4, in combinations of single, double, and quad. and single in designated slot, with each stick. Re debugging codes - no idea what these are or where to find the LED the link talks about :(

Spare PSU, i may be able to try something tomorrow (strip apart the wifes PC).
Swap GPU - as above, i'll steal hers and see what happens
Re: Bios, not sure i can get to it. Will spam F8/Del and find out.

I wasnt aware there was no onboard ability. I just pulled it out and tried :)

On your board there is a LED display that pops up a series of 2 numbers or a number and letter. You cannot miss it, looks like this:

https://www.google.com/search?q=gigabyte+led+debug&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS571US572&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=979&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=ok35VPzkIIeNNu6GhJAN&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAw#imgrc=x5X3SUOqj3j9DM%253A%3B1PdKPaUDtEyOhM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.pcgameware.co.uk%252Fimages%252FGigabyte-Z97X-GAMING-7-DEBUG-LED.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.pcgameware.co.uk%252Freviews%252Fmotherboards%252Fgigabyte-z97x-gaming-7-motherboard-review%252F%3B1368%3B772

It is a debugging tool used to troubleshoot the system rather than have a million jumpers to try to set like when I was a kid. When you power the system look at the board and report back to what pops up on this LED.

I had similar problem, built a 8core amd piledriver, it all started up like you said then turned itself off, turned out when i moved everything over at some point my main hdd became unreadable, got a new SSD and then it was fine and i could install windows!

are you able to enter bios?
Stedios Mar 6, 2015 @ 2:49am
Mines sorted now, I had an old CDrom so I had no boot device and could not get into the bios, Once I had a new Cd it booted into bios but the HDD was not listed, so I got a SSD and everything worked fine. cheers

BIOS Setup
BIOS (Basic Input and Output System) records hardware parameters of the system in the CMOS on the
motherboard. Its major functions include conducting the Power-On Self-Test (POST) during system startup,
saving system parameters and loading operating system, etc. BIOS includes a BIOS Setup program that
allows the user to modify basic system configuration settings or to activate certain system features. When
the power is turned off, the battery on the motherboard supplies the necessary power to the CMOS to keep
the configuration values in the CMOS.
To access the BIOS Setup program, press the <Delete> key during the POST when the power is turned on.
To see more advanced BIOS Setup menu options, you can press <Ctrl> + <F1> in the main menu of the
BIOS Setup program.
To upgrade the BIOS, use either the GIGABYTE Q-Flash or @BIOS utility.

Q-Flash allows the user to quickly and easily upgrade or back up BIOS without entering the operating
system.

@BIOS is a Windows-based utility that searches and downloads the latest version of BIOS from the
Internet and updates the BIOS.
For instructions on using the Q-Flash and @BIOS utilities, refer to Chapter 4, "BIOS Update Utilities."
Chapter 2
BIOS Setup

Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current
version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. To flash the BIOS, do it with
caution. Inadequate BIOS flashing may result in system malfunction.

BIOS will emit a beep code during the POST. Refer to Chapter 5, "Troubleshooting," for the beep
codes description.

It is recommended that you not alter the default settings (unless you need to) to prevent system
instability or other unexpected results. Inadequately altering the settings may result in system's
failure to boot. If this occurs, try to clear the CMOS values and reset the board to default values.
(Refer to the "Load Optimized Defaults" section in this chapter or introductions of the battery/
clearing CMOS jumper in Chapter 1 for how to clear the CMOS value

Hey guys, thank you so much for your help and advice!

This morning I decided to do a few tests based onw hat has been sugested.
I ended up having to Bread Board the system.

Motherboard, 1 stick of ram, CPU, CPU Cooler and GPU, all hooked up to power. No case, no nothing. It worked.
I installed items one at a time. It still worked.
I Installed basic bread board into Case - it worked.
I installed all Case Header Pins etc. It failed.

Turns out - 1 x Internal to Front USB header was causing a short, and rebooting the system
Cable has been unplugged and everything is fine! :)
Happy camper.

Thanks again guys!
