Windows 7 saying current Video Card doesn't support DirectX9/Cannot change themes. (GTX 980)
Hey, I just recently got this error when trying to change the current theme.

It happens on all themes, Aero and Basic and high contrast themes.Even newly downloaded ones.
I've tried doing the SFC /scannow and it fines no issues, tried reinstall of drivers(Clean Install)
I tried disabling Desktop Manager and Themes in services and restarting. Nothing seems to work.

I ran the tool Microsoft Fix it and I got this [img]http://i.imgur.com/7Rz4T7d.jpg[/img]


Well Nvidia Control panel says I am currently connected through a GTX 980 and everything else detects the GTX 980. Even windows device manager.

I should note Theme service is turned on and Desktop manager as well.

You can run dxdiag tool to see if direct 3D is enabled.
I have done that already and all 3 DirectX features are enabled.

did you update mobo/chipset drivers?
did you install nvidia gpu drivers?
Yes all drivers are up to date. One of the first things I done was the system assesment tool as it said new changes have been made. That didn't work.

did you update drivers fom the mobo cd or windows update?

best to go to the oem mfg site, or mobo mfg site and get the latest drivers
along with nvidia for the latest gtx 970 driver
the drivers were updated not to long ago for the Mobo that is and it wasn't that. I think it happened recently after I installed the 980 as I haven't tried to change it but I was going to now and I get this. I think its got to do with Windows not seeing the 980 as a default device.

I have the latest drivers, I done a clean install of Nvidia drivers and software to see if that fixes it.

I can see it says I am using a Intel HD 4600 and the VRAM is 1024, not sure if that could be the issue.

(did you connect monitor to gpu video port or to the motherboard video port? )

is the theme you are trying to use a UxThemelike this one?

Haha I done that when I first switched to PC. I thought what I said in the OP would have covered that. But yes it goes from the GPU HDMI to the monitor HDMI

No I don't use any third party theme, I was making my own slideshow theme using pictures I had collected. E.G by ticking the boxes and apply then slecting the theme, even themes downloaded from Microsoft website don't work.

I've said this before. It has nothing to do with the Mobo, it happened after I changed my Graphics card. I'll update them for sure but I honestly think it has something to do with Windows + my GPU

Sorry if this sounds offensive :)

All the drivers of said devices are updated and BIOS as well. Same issue

This is most likely your Windows registry become corrupted or changed...

Try Control Panel > System
Rerun the "Windows Experience Index"

If your an advanced Windows user, and know how to use 'regedit', carefully do the following:

1. From the Start menu, click All Programs and then expand Accessories.
2. Right click on “Command Prompt” and click “Run as Administrator”.
3. Click on “Allow” from the Windows Security dialog.
4. In the Command Prompt window, type “regedit” (without the quotes) and press Enter.
5. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM (if this key doesn’t exist, create it)
6. Create a new DWORD (32-bit value) of UseMachineCheck, and set its value to 0.
7. Create a new DWORD (32-bit value) of Blur, and set its value to 0.
8. Create a new DWORD (32-bit value) of Animations, and set its value to 0.

(go back to the command prompt window opened before)

1. At the command prompt window, type “net stop uxsms” (without the quotes)
2. after that finishes, type “net start uxsms” (without the quotes)
3. Reboot
4. Go to Personalization in the Control Panel, Click on Window Color and Design
5. Apply Aero

Registry Disclaimer:
Sometimes this problem is caused by two Windows registry entries that have become corrupted. To fix the problem, you have to use Registry Editor to delete the corrupted registry entries. Do a BACKUP first, under regedit, you can click 'export' on those fields/folder and create a 'backup.reg' file to restore them back if required.

Okay I've done everything you said in that post but I go to Personalization and I cannot find this Window Color and Design. I see Window Color at the bottom but I click on it I only see the enable transparency, which is ticked, and it already was ticked

Click Start > type "aero" (without the quotes) in the Start Search box > then click "Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects". Anything?
Couldn't Identify the Problem.
And your running at native monitor resolution with "True Color - 32 bit" right? Windows Experience Index hasn't dropped down 3D graphics is a 1-2 out of 7.9 by any chance? Very odd issue.

Suggest try running the DirectX Runtime Web Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-nz/download/details.aspx?id=35

It will patch up any missing DirectX files wheither it's version 9, 10, or 11. It should do them all for backward compatibility support.
