After playing CS:GO for about 15 mins, Laptop overheats and fps drops to about 5. If I continue playing, the laptop shuts off.
Okay, so I have all Low settings enabled for CS:GO, so the settings are not the issue.

Like the title explains. When i start up CS:GO, it plays great high fps for about 15 minutes, then my laptop gets really hot and the fps drops to around 5...

I have a feeling it is the laptop fan, because i downloaded speedfan and it didnt even recognize a fan in my laptop. I also turn the laptop over a little bit while it was on and through the laptop vents below i looked and the fan blades were not spinning. So, that being said I have a feeling that the fan is obviously not working. After that, I opened up the laptop and looked at the fan, and the output cable for the fan is chipped at the connector part. Anyways, I went online to find a compatible/similar fan model according to the laptop i use, and i ordered it. It should be here in about a week or so, but I am hoping to god that the fan is the issue here and all i have to do is install the new one and I can then game with peace and happiness.

Also, to add in aswell, I just bought a targus laptop cooling pad today, and it seems to help a little bit with the airflow and cooling. It still overheats and fps drops eventually in cs:go, but it maintain the airflow and cooling a little better.

When i lay my hand over the place where the hard drive is located, it is very warm. Is this normal?

I also forgot to mention. I have switchable graphics in my laptop. If i use the integrated graphics, the fps isnt as high, but the overheating dosent get too severe and fps in-game dosent drop right away.

But, when i use my Nvidia Geforce GT630M 1GB, it plays cs:go great! Fps is really smooth and it is enjoyable, for only about 15 minutes, and then my laptop gets pretty hot and the fps drops in game to around 5fps.

So, anyways right now im currently keeping it on intel graphics (integrated) until i receive my new laptop fan in the mail.

Need advice and feedback of what you guys might think the issue actually is!

Let me know and comment if you have any questions for me, and i will do my best to answer them, so that we can get this resolved and i can get back to enjoying cs:go with good fps and less heating problems...

Thanks all.

Cheers!

Also when I run SpeedFan this information is written in the text box at the top of the program:

Win9x:NO 64Bit:YES GiveIO:NO SpeedFan:YES
I/O properly initialized
Linked ISA BUS at $0290
Linked Intel 6 Series SMBUS at $2040
No active display found!
Scanning ISA BUS at $0290...
Scanning Intel SMBus at $2040...
SMBus msg : SMB Error $30 : COLLISION (48)
Found TOSHIBA MK1059GSMP on AdvSMART
Found Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz
End of detection

*** I am really concerned of what "SMB Error $30 : COLLISION (48)" might be. Anyone here know what the issue could be? Is it because my cpu fan is not working and that is what speedfan is telling me? Or is it something completely different??

Get a can of compress air, available from most computer stores. Clean the dust from the fans and filters. Because everything in a laptop is packed together so tightly, dust can create some major blockages, if you haven't been cleaning it regularly.

If the fan itself is damage, you might be able to get a replacement. However, normally it's just blockage, dust or a wire leaning against it, etc.

Consider a laptop cooling pad (larger the fan, the better), if you really need to seriously increase the amount of cooling.

Thanks for the reply Azza!

I will do my best to clean all the dust from the inside of the laptop. I am going to wait until i receive my new laptop fan in the mail.

Also when i install the new fan, I will then take a can of compressed air and blow all of the dust out of the laptop, and make it sparkly clean before i re-assemble it.

After it is assembled, I will try to play counter-strike and record my before&after temperatures for my HardDrive (HD0), Core 0, Core 1, Core 2, and Core 3 from "SpeedFan".

I will keep you guys posted if anything arises.

Thanks so much for the help!

If you have any extra pointers, tips or advice for me regarding my laptop overheating issue, please comment below!

Cheers!

You may also have a cpu problem, it sounds like cpu is overheating and shutting its self down to prevent permenant damage, but I could be wrong

It could possibly be! Thanks so much for your feedback, Fox!!!

Cheers buddy!

Clean out all the dust, then run Prime95 for about 10-15 mins and see what the Temps get up to.

laptops make terrible gaming systems. I myself have one that overheats, and makes my fps drop, but rarely shuts off because my fan is going full speed. Things that helped me, I prop up the back of the laptop off of the table so that there is more airflow by sticking some sticky rubber dimples for doors and cabinets on the back underside. I also updated my BIOS to ensure proper fan speed. There are programs that can run the fan at full speed all the time as well. I use a dust spray in the heatsink and fan regularly.

Overall these things should help. But yeah, if your CPU fan is not working, that's your main problem.

Also, everything that creates heat in a laptop is your enemy. One way to cut down on some heat is to spend some money on a good SSD. SSDs create significantly less heat than main stream HDDs.

Most laptops require nearly complete dis-assembly to clean out and replace cooling parts.

This requires skill, patience, proper materials, tools and it really helps to have a service guide so you take it apart and put it back together correctly.

If you do not have even one of these things, you should probably have a qualified person do it.

Proper heat-sink transfer material is an absolute MUST or you'll be putting a brick back together. This is not any type of paste nor will standard "thermal tape" work.

Hi all.

So, I ran a "torture test" (Blend),(8TestThreads:Tests some of everything, lots of RAM tested) and:

*ALSO* Just a reminder. I ran this test after I removed the broken CPU fan from
the laptop. That being said, this test was ran
with NO fan installed. Only had a cooling pad underneath the laptop and a house fan cooling the side.

*Still patiently waiting for my new laptop fan to arrive in the mail...

Are you monitoring the CPU/GPU temps or u just wait til it locks up?

Don't use it til the fan gets replaced. Otherwise u might damage it.

OK. I will definitely refrain from using it until the fan gets replaced.

Also.

Yes, I am currently monitoring the temperatures. The laptop hasnt locked up as much since I have placed a cooling pad underneath and a house fan on the side.

So, is it in my best interest to wait until i install a new fan before using the laptop?

Lets just say. If i use the laptop until my fan gets here. Which will be about 1 and a half weeks, will there be any damage to my laptop at all? From a little overheating?

Please provide me with honest answers, opinions, and experiences of your own that relate to this topic. Please comment below.

Thanks all.

Cheers!
