Planning for the funeral of a hard drive.
After starting up my computer today I was greeted with a nasty looking notification stating that the "S.M.A.R.T. threshold was exceeded" I knew this was not good and that most likely it was thermally ill. Knowing that it probably wasn't going to make it out of this alive I started to back up the drive instantly, after that finished (which took a while) I decided it was time to run HDDScan only to realize I had no idea what I was doing.
After messing around with it for a few minutes I started up a verify test on the failing drive and that's running now, or at least I think it is (It says Executing, but it's been executing for a while now...).

I guess what I'm asking is am I doing it right? I've never had a drive fail on me before and well it's hard to see your first one go, but after using it for about 7 years I think it's served its purpose well and it's time for it to move on.

At any rate should I just run a verify test or should I do more like the read/write test and how would I go about making an exact copy of this thing onto another drive?
Also if it helps out at all, I can't get a new drive for about 2 weeks, but I do have 1 other drive in my system. The dying drive is 1 Tb and the secondary one is 3Tb. So would it be possible to set it up to have a partition that's the same size as the first one, make a copy of the first drive to the partition and set that partition to be a bootable?

If you have any ideas or want to help could you point me in the right direction? I've been working with computers for a while now I still remember every part I painted and put into this thing, but I've never really messed with hard drives.

Also for those of you who want to know I will be picking out a nice shadow box and placing the drive in it so I always remember what a good piece of equipment he was. and to have a nice decoration on the wall.

Also, thanks for reading this rather lengthy post I've never been good at being short and concise about things and an extra thanks to those who send out love and help to the drive!

Whoops, forgot to add my specs! (although I don't think its really important in this case....)

How old are the drives? Namely the dying one; as most carry 1 - 3 year warranty, depending on Maker/Model

You can go on the maker's website:
http://www.seagate.com
http://www.wdc.com
and go to Warranty section and do a check of your Drive's Serial# to get a warranty check on it.

If a drive is showing signs of going bad, acting up, bios smart failure; etc. Then go to the drive makers site, go to your drive model/type and go to download section and download their Windows Diagnostic software and run that on your drive. Write down the model# of drive, as well as any error codes that diag-software produces. As that can be helpful (also required if u can RMA your drive).

Also, if u need serial# of a drive, u can do this with certain apps without the need to look on the physical drive itself. Namely apps like CrystalDiskInfo or Speccy.

4 Titans! ♥♥♥♥! RMA if under warranty, otherwise get a WD - never had one fail on me. I've got a 250GB from 2008 still going strong.

Hay thanks I ran the SeaTools and that did confirm that it was dying and I'm going to go off and get a replacement tomorrow. And actually I was looking at a WD because my second drive is a WD and its really been great. The Seagate one is the failing one and I've had it for about 6-7 years now so it defiantly lived a long life. I looked into the RMA but it was only for 2 years I think. Thanks so much for the help!!!

We used to call them whizzers,.. To be taken to the top of a very high building and 'whizzed' into oblivion.
