i7 5820K Haswell-E 6 Core @ 3.8GHz + DDR4 Ram OR i7 4790K Quad core @ 4.0GHz + DDR3,
Hi All, looking to upgrade (Just used for gaming) and after some advice. I'm currently running a rig with DDR2. The RAM on both choices will be 16GB 2400MHz, the graphics card will be the GXT 970 (Gigabyte Gaming) so do I fork out the extra £220 of the Haswell-E+DDR4 set-up? Will it be more future-proof and therefore worth the extra or is it just overkill and the DDR3 set-up will be fine for years to come? Cheers

A quad channel DDR4, six core i7 X99 setup is only good for work or extreme gaming setups with 3-way or 4-way SLI. System RAM speeds don't really make much of a difference in gaming with a dedicated graphics card. The i5-4690K or i7-4790K with 8GB DDR3 and a good graphics card like the GTX 970 will run games maxed out with high fps for a good few years.

Games rely on single core performance. You would need a new CPU anyway when a beast like the i5-4690 or i7-4790 aren't cutting it anymore. The extra cores of an X99 build give better multi-threading power for rendering. The i7-4790K has 8 thread power if you want extra multi-threading. The 4 thread i5 is plenty for gaming with one or two GPUs. Games mostly care about GPU power. A good graphics card is the most important. Check CPU gaming benchmarks.
X99 is for rendering and editing. It's more of a workstation platform. That being said, it can game very well. I'd go for either an i7 4790k or an i5 xxxx. They are both quad cores and should have no problems with a 970.

Thanks for the advice, i'll go for the i7 4790k set-up and put the extra money aside to pick up a second graphic card later in the year then :)
