In recent NVIDIA line-ups, since when was it a requirement to use 2 or more GPUs?
3 screens on a single GTX 680 wasn't an issue.

But TBO, how is 2 screen surround worth while? In some games it would just be very annoying at the very least, like shooter games for example.

And this is also nothing, new, if you google this "issue", NVIDIA Surround using only 2 screens has worked now for quite some time.

Where are you finding any websites saying 2 displays work with nvidia surround?

anything I am finding says it is impossible.
This is something many people have wanted for years now. I know for a fact only a couple months ago this was still impossible.

As for application, shooters might be odd on displays with large bezzel, but personally isnt too bad. Just tried borderlands 2 and battlefield 4, and when the heads line up in my 2 screens BOOM headshot haha. Hasnt been easier xD

Also, games such as eve online, makes it easier to keep across my displays.

My recordings can now have higher resolution video to work with.

Perhaps I should add that my displays are 3d, I suppose 3d vision surround is a better description.

So what did the trick here then? The newest driver (344.11) ?
im using 344.11 driver. I also use a program called display fusion, it has been updating these past few days.

But honestly I have no idea what let me turn surround on!

I was noticing unusual lag on my second monitor when putting chrome on it to debug a game im working on. Thought maybe some setting hidden who knows where was making display 2 get throttled.

Read potentially the refresh rates were different.

Long story short, there was the enable surround options not greyed out! and sure enough....it is working :O

I have now proceeded to have display fusion split the single surround display and treat it still as 2 displays, and my performance problem is solved.
Of course, I couldnt resist trying out a few games. They seem to work splendid and surround properly works with them!

Now back to happy developing times ^.^
or more realistically, probably get some sleep.

p.s
also potentially related, I have been using my nvidia shield tablet with my computer. there was some update when I plugged in my controller. who knows if that might have changed anything.

I cant think of any other explanations honestly.
Well with regards to SHIELD, this was just an API/Android update; nothing to do with your NVIDIA Drivers/GFE software/features.

With the launch of the GeForce GTX 680 it is now possible to run an entire Surround setup on just the one graphics card. In this guide, we’ll show how to correctly configure 2D Surround and 3D Vision Surround systems using all available ports and connectors, and combinations of video cards, be that one card, two cards in 2-Way SLI, or three cards in 3-Way SLI.

For further details regarding the new Surround capabilities of the GeForce GTX 680, please read our comprehensive ‘Surround On The GeForce GTX 680’ article.

Monitor Prerequisites
In 2D Surround, any combination of monitors that share common timings will work but if the displays are not identical this may result in a lower than optimal resolution, and each must have, at minimum, one DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort connector. Aesthetically, identical monitors are preferable, but not a requirement.
In 3D Vision Surround, each monitor must be an identical make and model, and you must use three matching digital connectors. We will go into detail below, but you may need additional adapters for this.
The Accessory Display, the forth monitor, does not have to be identical to the three Surround displays, but does require one of the three possible connectors.

SURROUND MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Operating System
> Microsoft Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit

Motherboard
> SLI motherboard is required for all SLI configurations. NVIDIA recommends a PCI-E 2.0 x16 motherboard for the best performance. Please make sure you have updated your motherboard SBIOS to the latest version.

> NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 295, GeForce GTX 590, GeForce GTX 690, and GeForce GTX TITAN Z cards do not require an SLI motherboard and work on all compatible motherboards.

System Memory
> 2GB is required (4GB is recommended for 64-bit operating systems).
