are the 4k monitors a waste of money
i know they are higher resolution, but right now are there even any games optimized for that, arent i really only gonna be able to see at the resolution i have now anyway, until games start to be optimized for it is it really even worth it?

Only worth it if you believe it is. Some people like to be on the cutting edge and get the newest and greatest things available. If you have no need for it now or anytime in the near future, don't worry about it.

Are they worth the 500-2500$ they're priced at today?
I don't really think so, but having one would pretty much eliminate the need for a multi-monitor setup.

4k has alot of potential for multi-tasking and you don't have to run your games at your display's native resolution. Launch your game in the usual 1080p in windowed mode and you can have your guides or maps or whatever open and accessible on the other 2/3rds of the screen without being put out of commission by alt-tab.

nothing will ever eliminate the need for multi monitor setup, it always will have a use in offices and gaming alike, but yeah i think the only point to having one now would just to be so you dont have to upgrade later, if i bought one i would buy two or three to have multi monitor setup, but thats just because i use a lot of programs at once sometimes,

Well if you can get a 4K 43 inch monitor for the same price or lower as 4*2K/1080p 21.5 inch monitors then it's as good a deal or better, if you need 4 monitors or 1 giant one that can do the work of 4.

even if i get a giant one ill still get 2 or 3 just cause, bragging rights i guess, anyway my year old acer 24 inch led 1920*1080 16:9 monitor was 80$, so i think it will be pretty hard to beat that

stuff like taht always happens to me i get something very good at a great price and will be top of theline for about 2 weeks then someone or something, some mythical godly force realizes i have the best out ther and they say hey, lets make better crap than what he has, he does not deserve to have the best out there

how so "optimized"? Newer games just grab the info about available res from Windows. So if you have a 4K monitor, newer games likely are able to run at that res, given you have a beefy GPU.
And what do you mean by "see at the resolution i have now"? You'll see the game at whatever resolution you set it to.

you cannot set games that high yet, it is just too high of a resolution, they are just not optimized for it yet, it will be worth it in a year or so when games are able to run that high, but right now there are not going to be many games out at 4k resolution, same goes with windows, i dont think ill see a difference in games until they support higher resolutions

Yes you can set games that high. How do you think 4K benchmarks are done? Modern games aren't really restricted to fixed resolutions. They just grab the available max res from Windows.

That's how people play at 4k, triple monitors, 6x-eyefinity etc.

how big of a difference is it? is it worth it at the moment or am i better of upgrading my actual computer, my specs are currently not to good, but they perform amazing for what they are,

Operating System
Windows 8.1 64-bit
CPU
AMD A8-5600K 65 °C
Trinity 32nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
ASRock FM2A75 Pro4-M (CPUSocket) 35 °C
Graphics
Generic Non-PnP Monitor (1920x1080@30Hz)
PANASONIC-TV (1920x1080@30Hz)
512MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7560D (ASRock) 7 °C
Storage
465GB Seagate ST500DM002-1BD142 ATA Device (SATA) 32 °C
Optical Drives
ASUS DRW-24B1ST c
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

my graphics card is built into my cpu, its over a year old now, but i can run skyrim on ultra graphics without aa or that other enhancement, and the high res texture pack al with my distances at about 50-75%, i would say that that is pretty good performance for what it is, would i be better off upgrading or buying a 4k monitor? i have around 800$ to dump into it

Uh, don't get a 4K monitor with that.

First, because your mobo likely doesn't have a DisplayPort 1.2 and certainly not a HDMI 2.0 port. However those are the only that can deliver 4K at 60Hz.

Second, your GPU isn't even remotely gonna cut it for 4K. 4K is four times as many pixels as 1080p. Requires a looot of power to run newer games at, as well as plenty of VRAM because, well, large images take up much space.
So your GPU will break its neck over either its limited VRAM or its weak performance (compared to dedicated cards).

Currently, in demanding games at 4K, even top end cards like a 780(Ti)/Titan or a 290(X) still struggle to achieve playable framerates.

For 800$, you're better off upgrading your PC to make it viable for gaming at high(est) settings and high resolutions - at all.
Like, best things for starters would probably be going for a strong Intel i5, a beefy dedicated GPU (like the GTX970, best value in the high-end range), and possibly a stronger PSU to be able to supply those parts with enough juice.

so i was right almost, the games support it so i was wrong, but graphics cards cannot handle it so i was right, its just not worth it yet, i am going to upgrade my computer, i think ill stick with amd they are cheaper and i just dont think its worth the extra money for intel processors, amd 8 core 4-6 ghz will be plenty enough to run my games, and a better card never hurts, especially with mine, but for the price i paid and with my gpu built into my cpu, it has an outstanding performance.

The new GTX900 cards have HDMI 2.0 also make sure any monitor or tv has HDMI 2.0 built in
becuase alot of them are still shipping with HDMI 1.4 that require firmware updates and that sort of thing for 2.0 but im waiting for the tvs to start shipping with HDMI 2.0, Unless you plan on using display port.

Yeah i hear ya im still going to be running at 1080p for a while until i purchase a 4k tv. i just bought a 970 SSC 4GB and im going to see if that can run 4k res at playable framerates once i get the tv. if not im going to see if two 970s can handle it. and yeah it is expensive and i hate spending that much money but i always do for some reason.

You could test that already. Do some downsampling from 4K to 1080p. If your 970 gets you good framerates at downsampled 4K, you're set.
