Need to know if this processor is good enough for this GPU
Hello, Steam Community. So, yesterday I posted a discussion on this forum asking if a certain pre-built computer was a good gaming desktop. However, I changed my mind on that and decided to just upgrade my family computer and use that occasionally. One of the main components I need to upgrade is my GPU. My current GPU is Nvidia Geforce 310 (Which isn't a very great card) and I wish to upgrade it to the Geforce GTX 750 Ti. However, I asked a friend and he said that my processor may not be reliable for that GPU. My current processor is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80 GHz. I was wondering if this processor is capable of withstanding that graphics card. I have a strong feeling that it's not capable but before possibly wasting my money on a new one I would still like to ask a professional about this and, well, the steam community is my best bet on a quick profession. Anyway, leave your thoughts about this processor in the comment section so that I can see if it's capable of running that GPU. Oh, and by the way, I know completely nothing about certain PC components so, if you would, please leave it as dumb as you possibly can. I'd appreciate it. ;)

Thank you for your time

a couple quick Thoughts. I agree with rove that the 760 is a good choice. Watch for price drops and sales since nvidia just released their new 900 line of gpu's. also you wouldnt be able to really upgrade your cpu with out getting a new motherboard as well. unless you get one in the same family. But you should be fine with the one you have. Linus did a video on a dual core pentium cpu and an i7 running the same game with a 780 ti and the frame rate difference was minimal. Games dont really utilize your cpu that much. Another thing to think about. Im not sure what kind of computer your family has but i might actually looking into getting a blower style cooler (reference design) mainly because the cards with multiple fans push the hot air from the gpu into your case and rely on your case to have good air flow. If its a regular computer from dell or something like that chances are its not going to move too much air. A blower style cooler on the other hand will move hot air out the back of your case. One last thing to consider the 750ti is running the maxwell articture (also found in the 900 series as apposed to the 760 which has kepler) meaning it is power efficent. you can get one from evga that wont even need any PCIE cables for power. This card is decent for medium setting 1080p gaming. Depending on your current computer you may not have enough power or the necessary cables to power a 760.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487024&cm_re=gtx_750ti-_-14-487-024-_-Product Best bet if you dont have a large power supply This is pretty much plug and play Not going to be the most powerful card in the world but it will run the games and should work in an old computer

As a matter of fact, it is a dell. Excuse me for being such a hassle but I'm very ignorant on this subject and am still a bit confused. I understand that I may need to get a new PSU but now you're mentioning a cooler. Is this another component that I may need to upgrade or am I just screwed and not going to be able to install a GTX 760? I don't really want to get a 750 Ti since I would like to enjoy high settings and a high resolution. However, if that's all I can get on this computer than so be it. Thank you all for your help. I really appreciate it. Please tell me what else I need in order to install this GPU. Thank you. ;)
At very worst you need:
*GPU to install (IE GTX 760)
*new 500w or greater 80 Plus Bronze or better PSU with two PCIe 6 pin connectors.
*New case with enough GPU clearance room (length from expansions slots to nearest obstruction for a long GPU) to fit whichever GPU you selected.
*Case fans = to or > than 3*120mm fans for optimum cooling. Can go on less if required.

This is at very worst.

At very best all you need is a new GPU. Middle is to need some but not all of the items mentioned above.

Okay, that list makes things much easier. I'll take apart my computer very shortly and see all what I need. Although I've said this numerous amount of times, I'll say it once again. Thank you and have a nice day. :pleased:
