Will extra 4GB of Ram make much of a difference?
Hey guys. Just started PC gaming about 3 months ago. Some of my games run at 60fps 1080p on high settings while games like Metro 2033 are around 50fps.
Just wondering would some extra Ram help improve performance and limit frame rate drops?

I have an i3-3240, 8GB DDR3 and an R9- 270 OC gpu.

Would another 4GB be much of a difference and must i stay with DDR3 or would DDR5 be compatible also with my spec? If you have any good recommendations for certain products i would appreciate it.

There is no such thing as DDR5, only GDDR5 for graphics cards. DDR4 has only just come out and is not widely used yet as it and the motherboards needed for it are both expensive.

8GB is enough for any game and should not cause problems as long as you don't have something in the background eating up most of your RAM.

More RAM wont help, more powerful graphics card and CPU will. Metro is quite demanding game anyway.

8gb is plenty and adding more ram won't help you. The thing is some games are not optimized well and you will get less fps. Also metro is a very demanding game alone, not many pc's will hit 60 on that game.

Ahem. Well that was embarassing lol
Would a smaller monitor make any difference? I'm using a 32'' 60htz tv monitor

Metro 2033 uses a few threads, I think 8, so if you upgrade your CPU an FX-8350 or an i7 would be something to consider. If you play plenty of other games that stick to 2 or 4 threads, an i5 would do fine. Also your GPU should be upgraded.

Thanks for the help. I will definitely be looking a new new CPU down the line but i only got my GPU the other day anf i'm pretty happy with it at the moment.

This with maybe a little more emphasis on GPU upgrade. You could consider Crossfire also BUT I don't think your CPU would support it and maybe not your motherboard either. Still if you upgraded CPU and motherboard then you could Crossfire another R9 270 of the same brand just fine as long as you also get a PSU that can handle that.

Frankly for now I think your system is fine and just be happy with it how it is.

+4GB RAM will help nothing I know of except Planetary Annihilation and maybe future games.

No outputting 1080p resolution will have the sme performance no matter what the screen size is. The only thing that will change is the fidelity of the graphics as you are sending out the same picture and the larger the display the less concentrated the ppi will be.
No. RAM is just there to store information and to be accessed from quickly. It won't boost performance if it's not being used over 8gb.

Hence why it's called RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY.

There is also a difference between VRAM, which is video RAM for your GPU. These mostly use GDDR5 which is like DDR3 for RAM. More VRAM would help with higher resolutions and textues.
