Second-hand budget PC building
I am willing to build a gaming PC with second-hand parts. My maximum budget is $400 for GPU, CPU, motherboard and RAM. Here are my options: any other thoughts inside these price ranges?

GPU: (AMD is cheaper than nVidia for similar performance)
  • Radeon HD 7870 - $110
  • Radeon HD 6770 - $60

CPU:
  • Athlon X4 750K - $80
  • Core i7-920 - $40

Mboard: (need other options on this)
  • ASUS P8Z77 Intel- $80

RAM:
  • 2x4GB PC3-10600 DDR3-1333Mhz non-ECC - $70

I am really willing to risk buying second-hand components. I am not a crazy gamer, I run a Athlon 64 X2 3600+ and GeForce GT 430 for over a decade, just want a little improvement.

Will this gear run smooth together?

Thanks in advance.

Ya you can get a brand new system for $400 which is probably a better idea & can be upgraded, it would be good to get a good dedicated GPU in here later:
A8-7600 AMD APU (CPU + iGPU) good basic PC build:
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Rove/saved/2QyWGX
Base Total: $395.48
Mail-in Rebates: -$35.00
Total: $360.48

However I checked your profile and it says Brazil so are you coming to the USA for shopping (you quoted in $) or do you need prices from Brazil shops?

I'm not sure what to recommend to you since I don't know Brazil pricing & the parts you listed are not a complete build and almost total $400 just by themselves without all the other stuff you need like PSU, case, HDD & so on.

Tip: use Linux instead of Windows as it's cheaper.

Isn't 4+ cores better than 2?
Only for multitasking, and some newer games (most older games use 2 or just 1 core) Although I like AMD, it depends entirely on what you're using. If you're like me and plan on keeping multiple applications up, go for the AMD in that case, if you're looking for just gaming, and not a lot of programs open at once, go for that intel.

I don't feel like multitasking much. But what about a good looking $40 i7-920?

as in this thing? O.o http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Processor-2-66GHz-LGA1366-BX80601920/dp/B001H5T7LK if you're finding that for $40 you may wanna be careful. It may be damn near useless.
The i7-920 is still a nice CPU as long as nothing is wrong with it. Also it can probably overclock like a beast up to like 3.5~ GHz or so, though that number is only a guess based on what I've seen some slower Core2Quads do.

Find a overclocking guide online to see what they actually got it to.

All used i7-920 are on this price range.

I am buying in USA then bring to Brazil. I said $400 budget, but something like $250 second-handed would be ideal, really. Buying that APU don't seems viable, a used GTX 550 ti goes for $70 and performs way better.
As for the other parts, I will use some spare HDDs, custom built cases etc. Even thinking on mineral oil cooling, since all my fans are destroyed by dust where I live.

Really? Well damn that's a large price drop. I may look into it myself at some point then.

he stated his problem with fan cooling though. Apparently he's in a location where dust builds up pretty quickly.

Since my actual PC is over a decade outdated, any upgrade will be a big deal. The $250 is still good, that is why I was looking for used parts. I am no longer hardcore gamer. This $250~400 expense is actually a luxury.
Take that $400 PC, isn't possible to build one similar for $250 using discontinued (but higher-end) parts?
About the oil cooling. Apart from cost and oil leaking, what is wrong about it?
Edit: Well, forget about the oil. I know its a potential bad idea.

Simplifying on the matter:

I guess a <$120 GPU is more than enough. Good examples:

7870:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/XFX-FX-787A-CDFC-Radeon-HD-7870-2GB-Lifetime-Warranty-CDJ4-/261571203854?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item3ce6dbd30e

550 ti:

As for the Mboard and CPU, I need something that won't bottleneck it and still be a bang for the buck. <$100 CPU, <$100 board and <$80 RAM. I have very little knowledge on this subject, compatibility etc.

Use 7870 its the best out of all
Here is something both of you Rove and Eucliwood might want to read before calling me Intel fanboy. I wonder what it finally takes for you to wake up and smell the truth:

it doesnt your just another one of thoes Intel Fanboys Starting an AMD vs Intel Thread

It beats even FX-6300 without overclocking,,,

Why do you and the other Intel prophet only post benchmarks from a website that doesn't even test the CPUs they benchmark?
