It's still an upgrade from his 60hz TN, and the XL series is generally good.
I would just check for any issues with the panel before buying anything used.
I highly recommend it for hardcore and/or professional gamers.
As for 120Hz vs 144Hz - there's not much difference unless going for 3D, which 144Hz was designed for. The monitor supports 3D, but you can similar ignore that features.
You would get exceptionally little input lag from that monitor. However, limited viewing angles (not good for laying back in bed watching a movie) and motion processing isn't the best on that model.
BenQ XL series is extremely focused towards gamers (and gamers only) in FPS / Fast-pased action. Professional Counter-Strike players use these monitors for good reason.
120Hz Refresh Rate - Is ideal for high-end gaming graphics card that can dish out more than 60FPS. You will find fast movement, not as sluggish or tearing. This monitor however isn't one with G-Sync (syncs to your graphics card) so will highly depend on your graphic card performance to how well it performs.
2ms GTG Response is great for gaming purposes. Fast-moving action and dramatic transitions are rendered cleanly, without the smearing or ghosting.
Due to it's lack of 120Hz in 3D mode, gaming doesn't feel quite as smooth with that. Ideally a 144Hz monitor would excel more in 3D purposes. Im pretty sure this model was discontinued and replaced with a 120/144Hz model for that reason.
Colours aren't true - but it's designed that way. If your doing graphical art / work, it might not be so ideal, but for gaming it's great. Black eQualizer will show up dark scenes without over-exposing them. This way you can spot enemies hiding in the shadows, etc.
It sounds like a good price for it. I would highly consider it, if you have a graphics card which can handle higher FPS, the higher Hz will be a dream for gaming.
