CPU question for 1080p
I'm upgrading my current setup from a 1070ti / 7700k, to a 5070ti and possibly a 9800X3D.

Right now I run ultra wide monitors that are 1080, 144hz. Don't plan to upgrade my monitors any time soon either.

Is the 9800X3D massive overkill for 1080p at high refresh rates? If so, what do you suggest instead? Or should I just pull the trigger to "future proof" the setup?

i dont think there will be a problem as long as all the components are on the same standards .. only thing i personally dont like about high end processors is they tend to run hot and be grossly inefficient ..

It's nice to have stronger CPU so you won't be CPU limited too soon and it helps with stutters even today.

Check how 2 generations old CPUs aged. Ryzen 5700x and 5800x3D in particular to give you some perspective if it's worth spending extra. 5700x can struggle with some games today. I think the 9800x3D is current sweet spot for mid and high end builds.

Honestly it's kinda the opposite of what you might think. You're going to be more significantly CPU bound running at 1080p so the 9800X3D would make more of an impact at the lower resolution.

You're also going to be barely working the 5070Ti at 1080p. However, even if you don't plan on upgrading your displays any time soon, you can still use DLAA and DLDSR (which is essentially the opposite of what is done with DLSS) to render your game at a higher resolution and then downsample that to your native 1080p display resolution.

If/when you decide to upgrade you'll want to install Intel's Presentmon and setup it's overlay and logging so you can monitor your systems frametime and gpu_busy graphs to optimize & balance your graphics settings. You want your gpu_busy graph to be as close as possible to your frametime graph.
Thank you all!
