Finger print sign in device?
Are they really useful for windows sign in and would you recommend it?

Biometrics and "pass phrases" will never be more than a supplement to actual passwords.

laptops with the fingerprint reader just type a code as keyboard input

if you do use it, be sure to copy and save it somewhere safe
each finger will have different code and if a finger has scratch or is damaged it can lock you out if you dont have another way around

that alone can make it useless to use

For windows sign in, no. For more sensitive data, yes along with 2fa

While Microsoft offers such options like fingerprint or PIN # they are still locked behind the account password.

But no I would never bother with or use anything for fingerprint or face recognition
