ROG ally + SteamOS (no regrets so far)
I gotta say... I was skeptical with some early reviews, but! I install the official SteamOS on my rog ally and it's a killer combo. I have the powerful z1 extreme with the optimized SteamOS and all my controls works with all the games I've played so far. plus my 2tb ssd made it easier to install all my games.

SteamOS is running pretty smoothly both on desktop and gaming mode on the ally, but the battery it's still pretty bad because of the outdated hardware. still I love that valve finally did this! :) I'm pretty happy.

granted, I still use the OLED deck because the battery, and the display plus the trackpads are top notch. since I mostly play docked, with an OLED display, gonna use the ally for heavier games, 90hz or 120fps.

how's your guys experience so far? hopefully great!

I'm really optimistic for the future, and the steam deck 2.

Congratulations. Enjoy your games. Im jealous. Only handheld devices that i find ps slim. So this product is source for new tech devices i assume.
Considering the ROG people put the controls upside down like perverts, Steam Deck is the only way to go, even if SteamOS is available on both.

it might be, but as a handheld... the battery life it's not good. like I couldn't finish sonic DX sonic story on the rog, before dropping to 10%. I didn't test on the SteamOS yet, but I'm assuming it's going to be the same.

for contrast this steam deck allowed me to play three campaigns and was still 70% of battery. usually the campaigns are around 1 hour each, so that's a lot of time!

I would say the ROG ally is good as a dock mini PC

The weirdos put analog stick above the dpad. They should never do that. Only villains do that.

Im wondering some steam deck like devices has screen mirroring or cable connections to monitor. So your pad has it is?

Remote Play and Steam Link, sure. I don't think video-out through the USB-C port works too well, but It's been a while since I played around with it.

So you tested it. How was the device? Was it having difficulty? There was no slowdown while displaying an image on the screen, or when choosing whether to transfer the processor power to the monitor or to the game, right?

That's a tricky question, since there's plenty of different possible configurations. A USB-C dock to HDMI out works okay. Or being naughty and "e-wording" Wii-U or 3DS and using the Deck as the controller.

Of course, we're not really supposed to talk about that, since Valve accidentally showed the Steam Deck running Yuzu in an early promotional vid and had to quickly take it down. ¬‿¬

oh I see.. yeah like that it's difficult to reach. I agreed. I prefer the why valve did. on normal controllers, it works well tho like my x box x controller.

Hey, I know the back paddles can be remapped on SteamOS with the Ally per game like any other button, but can the Armory Crate and Command Center buttons be as well? (I understand they have functions in the Steam UI but what about elsewhere?)

Side question I don't expect anyone can answer but what the heck: Why is this extended compatibility only available on SteamOS? Even if you disable AC and all on the Ally, it'll be detected as a simple Xbox controller. reWASD and Handheld Companion can detect all buttons (even G-Helper).

I mean.. coz it's easy for you to have a great experience on other handhelds besides the steam deck :) that's the goal of SteamOS. something windows can't do very well.

you can remap the buttons with armoury crate, but it's not very intuitive. mapping do controls within steam is much easier and actually gives you more options. Enjoy
