Well fellas, the time has come...
The old man needs a new PC. It seems my current has or is near passing on.

Thank you for all those great years.

And thank you to Mr Newell for having me access my games even though Win 7 has ended.

However, Win 7 seems to have finally caught up with me.

I now come hat in hand to my Steam friends with advice on a new CHEAP PC, that only needs to play 2004 era games (Brothers in Arms, COD Classic, stuff like that), at 30fps, and 1080p.

That is ALL i need.

This my current PC...

Dell Optiplex 380.

So 'anything" even slightly better than that, is all i need. Preferably new.

Would this meet my needs as compared to what i have now?

https://www.amazon.com/BOSGAME-5700U-Displays-Computers-Emulator/dp/B0CNPD2V3G/

https://www.amazon.com/Beelink-Versatile-Computer-Desktop-Display/dp/B0BQ3FNP2Y/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?

I'm def not a techie, and don't know much about makeup of computers. I just need enough to play the old games i already have (and of course for very basic computer needs, like going to websites).

I am not in the market for Nasa PC's, or computers that play todays games. I am quite happy with Ge Force Now for new Steam games thru my Xbox.

Any help appreciated.

Your grateful pal, and buddy,

Ranger :steamhappy:

I think i may settle for this one...

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DSJ1WSZB/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?th=1

This should be able to play the old games i want to play at a decent rate ( for me as i said only need 1080p at 30 frames for games like COD Classic and Brothers in Arms).

And then i have to install Win 11, however much that may cost. Thanks all for your help thus far.
Good choice. It will actually completely stomp those old games with pure future-tech. The integrated Intel UHD graphics on that chip has some halfway decent modern gaming chops for what it is.

Also I don't think you're going to have to worry about Windows 11. I'm pretty certain it will be pre-installed and activated out of the box.

Bad Motha has the worst take on this. A GT 1030 and an i5 7400 with just 8 gigs of R.A.M. will run Call of Duty 2 on 1080p max settings at a recorded 75 F.P.S. and the player placing a footnote that he gets between 100-120 F.P.S. without recording, suggesting a G.P.U. bottleneck. Vega 11 and Vega 8 integrated graphics perform about the same as a G.T. 1030, and thus will perform the requested task just fine.

With that having been said, I would go with an A.M.D. A.P.U. or maybe an Ultra series processor because generally speaking Intel is a bit behind on their integrated graphics.

The P4 Light Gaming Mini P.C.[www.amazon.com] you showed us in your first post should be fine in my estimation, and right now it's only $300 with the $20 off coupon so I'd nab that. I'm not 100% sure though because these mini P.Cs. are designed with laptop parts rather than desktop parts, which tend to be weaker to achieve a lower power envelope and fit in with constrained thermals.

For that reason I'd actually suggest you get this H.P. M01-F3006 from Best Buy in the price range you're looking at. It has a full 5600g in it[www.officedepot.com]. It's on sale for $400 which is a decent price and just slightly more expensive than what you have been showing us. Moreover, if you change your mind about wanting to play newer games you would be able to upgrade the device to suit your revised needs, unlike with that sort of mini pc.

A 5600g based system is perfectly well suited for what you want to do though.

Thanks for the help.

Those aren't PC's.... they're mini-PC's, Overpriced ones at that.

You can build a better PC for $500-$600.

You're throwing your money away.

You could have built a PC for that much and that one doesn't even have a dedicated GPU.

If you understand Ranger's history, what his particular needs are, and where he's coming from, you'll know this isn't a bad direction for him to go.

If you are not playing newish games, then way upgrade?

Simply clean house and learn basic PC maintenance (plus get an OS clone) then simply "die" format.

I also have one Win7 PC and one Vista PC (laptops) running on Win10 that are fairing very well to this day.

Simply clean house, re-establish the old PC to run better is all you need to do.

Because his current machine's hardware is now failing on him and Windows 10 goes EOL at the end of this year.

Based on what I've seen, a basic, functional, up-to-date, modern system running Windows 11 is all he needs. Access to a web browser and very light gaming of a couple of old games will suffice for his needs. This "mini-PC" already is much more powerful than his old, failing system. For heavier gaming, he enjoys the cloud-based GeForce Now, which means he doesn't need to worry about what kind of hardware he has. His computer is just an access portal for that.

Sure, he could build a PC for about $600, but then he's spending more for hardware he probably won't actually make full use of, and now he needs to build a PC as a "non-techie console noob". Or, he can spend $400 and get a little plug-and-play box that suits all his needs and he won't need to worry about it again for the next several years, considering how he'll be using it.

I hope you are going to enjoy this overpriced mini-pc
don't punish gramps with a old PC. buy him a good new one. obviously on board video card. he's gonna do solitaire and minesweeper championships. my 2 cents.

don't make him wait on a slow PC. that's cruel.

369 bucks wasn't bad. For 2004 era games, and with Win 11, and to meet my needs.

My only issue is what's gonna happen with Cloud and my Mods when i switch.

Right well, i'm "Gramps' lol. But you're right to an extent, i'm only playing older games on this new PC (Brothers in Arms, Sniper Elite 1, stuff like that). Not very demanding games.

I had to upgrade thought because it's Win 7 (and this PC don't have the memory for 10) and already getting all the crashes and problems with it.

As I said, no dedicated GPU and they are not exactly upgrade friendly.

Spending money on something that just barely scrapes by, is not the wisest path to take and you will realize that you're going to end up spending more money going the path that you're going than had you just built an actual PC.

Hell if you don't know how to put it together, just buy the parts and have someone do it for you. It wouldn't cost that much and it's exactly like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.

Mr Guyver, you would have me spend many hundreds of dollars to play 2003 era games. It's a miracle i'm spending 360.

That is more than enough for old games than 600 to build a PC, most of which i have no clue as to how PCs even work. You know this.

I am wasting money. I am wasting money on having a perfectly good PC, only for the fact Mr Nardella and Mr Newell are going to make it inoperable before long, and is already there.

And so i wait...
