How good is this laptop? Good deal?
MSI 4060, 16gb ram, i5 cpu $700

Right now the only games that I care about that cause my current laptop to struggle is RDR2, Elden Ring, and Cyberpunk. I just want to hit 60fps, high/ultra graphics, 1080p at least. I have a plethora of games on my backlog from like 2015 - Elden Ring so I don't care about most releases for 2025/2026.

I know gaming laptops are a joke compared to desktops, but this is more of a temporary purchase until I stop moving around so much. This is purely for easy portability.

4060 laptop is generally good enough for 1080p high / max 60 fps for most games.
Forgot to mention it's only 8gb of VRAM
Needs more RAM. You only got enough for windows.
*add extra 16gb ram yourself because it looks like a prebuilt with 32gig of memory is $300 more. $40 if you stick it in yourself.

If you don't know how to take a laptop apart find a buddy who does.

your gpu would quickly get bottlenecked by your cpu and your ram.

4060 mobile is not as strong as desktop gpu

its ~50 to ~115w depending on the laptops config (cooling and power)
4060 only has 8g dedicated vram

the igpu will be used to assist and control vsync/gsync/freesync when needed
the drivers work together since the nvidia card will write to their frame buffer in system ram

8gb vram is not future proof and these mobile CPU get bottlenecked by awful ram. Either spend more and get lpddr5x or buy cheap and upgrade in a year or two from now

The 4060 desktop vs mobile hardly differ in performance
Aim for something with i7 + RTX 4070 + 32GB RAM

The problem with people arguing that 8 GB of Vram is insufficient is that the next step up with more VRAM is the RTX 4080, but you are easily paying 2-3x as much as a RTX 4060 laptop.

Get the 4060 if you are budget constrained. It will do fine at 1080p, which is TC's target resolution.

its good, it'll run mostly every game, i have an r5 3600 and a rtx 3060 in a desktop which is absolute garbo

i find a lot of these people in these forums don't understand what budget is and complain too much about vram, 8gb is enough, 16gb of ram is enough and an i5 11th gen (i'm assuming as i might be getting the same laptop)

anyway, laptops good for what you want to play, you can even run cyberpunk on most gtx cards + it has framegen and dlss (angering more tech nerds here with those two)

You still get 8gb vram

8g of vram for the 4060 should be fine, its not really a strong enough gpu to warrant any more

You are right. He mentioned that he doesn't care about future proofing in the topic

but 16g for system ram is low
24-32g should be standard on new builds

since its a laptop with only 2 dimm slots, it should have 2x16g

its MSI.....right now the current issues are laptop turning off when on battery and hinges breaking....this is a issue with a lot of their 4060 models.....google my friend or read reviews on newegg....
For $700, it is is a good deal.
