What are your thoughts on the 24TB Seagate Barracuda hard drive? Model No: ST24000DM001
https://www.seagate.com/ca/en/products/hard-drives/barracuda-hard-drive/

Saw it on sale at a cheap $/TB on Newegg a while back, but now it is sold out.

Who tf needs 24 TB on a single drive....You can probably get the same 24 TB in a bank of 4 drive for a LOT less

This is what I was thinking.

Most PC's have RAID or can use Windows Storage Spaces to do the same thing, so unless you have a real shortage of space, I don't see why get one large drive like this.

Redundancy. If the drive dies, you lose a ton of data.

24TB is quite normal for a HD these days
hundrends of brands and models excist in that size...

26GB is more rare
you can buy WD ultrastar of Gold 26GB disks
-with cheapest models starting around 520 euro including 21% vat

==========
28TB disks do excist of WD and Seagate brand.. and a few models
-> but they have become rare to find for sale in regulair shops..
(basicly only in to buisnuis outlet shops I still see them.. so it might be they are no longer made?? not sure about that one though)

still it's not the end...

seagate will soon release the Exos M series with harddisk of 30, 32, 34 and 36 TB
(the are already listed in stores here.. but without price.. as not yet released)

=====================

24TB is the affordable level
with the cheapest 24TB disk 430 euro

so basicly :

36TB->not yet released
34TB-> not yet released
32TB -> not yet released
30TB -> not yet released
28TB -> sold out
26TB -> 520 euro (20 euro per TB)
24TB -> 430 euro (18 euro per TB)
22TB -> 380 euro (17 euro per TB)
20TB -> 330 euro (16.5 euro per TB)

surprised when I look in stores that all the
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10,12 TB HD's are basicly all gone now

zero for sale
(well i see a few 3, 4, 6, 8 TB models for sale.. but only very slow ones..

nothing like the 560mbit reading speed my 4TB disks have.. that were back than like 160 euro each....

I guess with both the largest and smallest HD's now no longer for sale
and basicly the faster drives also no longer sold..
it looks like it won't be long before we won't see any harddives sold at all anymore....

Newer motherboards also rarely have more than 4 Sata ports too.

my last desktop with room for 3 harddrives had intel core 2 duo 3 gigahertz. the desktops i got that is newer have room for 2 and came with 1.
gwwak 21 ABR a las 9:04 a. m.
My current case has room for 6 HDDs and 4 of the slots are full. If I get more than 6, I will need to consider the Meshify 2 (XL) case.

in fact I recenly looked and the last case released with even ONE front 5 3/4 bay was made 2016
(so cases that fit optical bays are all old stocks and dying out)

motherboards still have sata connectors but today not all have and the highest number you will find is 4 sata slots.
where not that long ago even budget motherboards had at least 12 slots.

there are still cases made with room for a harddisk.. but very few... true harddisk cages are very rare so usually it;s a crappy vertical mount (which is really not what you want for a spinnign disk)
-
the most I still see in cases is indeed two..

the harddisks themselves where not that long ago you could buy 1TB HD for 30 euro, 2 tb for 60 euro, 3tb for 90 euro, 4 tb for 120 euro 6 tb for 160 euro and 8 tb for 200 euro..
is over..

those small disks are no longer made and sold out. (the few 8tb/10tb disks still for sale are so overpriced you better go 20tb direcly anway)
you still can buy
26TB -> 520 euro (20 euro per TB)
24TB -> 430 euro (18 euro per TB)
22TB -> 380 euro (17 euro per TB)
20TB -> 330 euro (16.5 euro per TB)

which is a bit sad.
cheapest 1 tb ssd = 50 euro
(so 1tb hd that used to be 30 euro would have been a better deal for budgetbuilds)

cheapest 2tb ssd = 100 euro
(so again 2tb hd for 60 euro, was a better deal, if they were still made)

cheapest 4tb ssd = 230 euro
(the old 4tb hd of 120 euro would still be halve that.. so really sad they are no longer made)

the cheapest 8tb ssd = 600 euro
(having still 200 euro 8tb hd disks would means paying only a third..)

so I know not why lower size hd's have been discontinued.. it seems they still are bulk storage kings.

even more so if you have to do a lot of write/rewrites.. aka anything not just your instaldisk... you want a classical harddisk thats more durable to that kind of load than crystals.

but if you have a somewhat good pc with 5 m.2 slots, 3 of them gen 5, 2 of them gen 4

than you can add 20tb storage for 330 euro
(not as cheap as we used to have we used to have disks that would give prices of 10-12 euro per tb..)

to get that 20tb on your 5 m.2 slots would cost you with m.2 at least 5x230 = 1150
but most likely you already have 1 slot filling with your bootddrive.. (after all we wanted to ADD 20tb).. so than you will need at least 1 8tb + 3xtb and the total actually becomes 1290 euro...

all MUCH higher than the 330 euro for just using a 20tb hd.

I bought this one.

For a few dollars more i suppose i could have gotten 24tb instead of 8.

ouch thats steep for 8GB
heck even in 2016 I did not pay that much for 8GB

but it is an exeternal disk.. in a housing and with the line Xbox-certificate
its that cartificate that makes it so expensive...

if I look here external HD 24GB

https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/2071068/seagate-expansion-desktop-drive-24tb-zwart.html

this one is the cheapest here

416 euro including 21% vat and shipping.

but the 20TB versions for 333 euro is a slighly better price per TB

Oh is that why? Well, i guess next time maybe i'll ask here, but for Xbox idk if i'd get answers.

if it's for xbox.. well those console producers tend to instal "messing software" to prevent you to buy normal not overpriced harddisks..

if not for xbox.. than seeing that label just means you overpay..

but yes 200 euro for 8tb is quite steep today..
