Do you prefer an air cooler or an AIO?

Air for me. They are cheaper and perhaps the most important, it fits my case. My case is old and it doesn't support an AIO larger than 120mm.

I found the NZXT Kraken 360mm with temp display and RGB lights, for less than the price of the G510s. Sorry, but this advice is completely useless.

if you want the super cheap route, get and arduino, and 1.3in oled display and use that for displaying the temp or anything

The coolers were cheaper back then as well, so this is just lunacy on a whole other level.

You could also just get one of the lianli fans with the screen and gave thst tell you your temperatures instead if spending hundreds on a gimmicky aio that you could just about build a basic custom loop fir the same price.

Aye. Only reason i replied was because buying a second hand keyboard for a temp read-out, is possibly the dumbest thing i've read on these forums.....

I built a PC for a friend of mine with a 120mm AIO. It works perfectly. Air coolers are louder and many are getting so heavy, I'd worry about bending/breaking the mainboard. AIOs are also really cheap nowadays, and they are perfectly reliable at keeping your CPU within acceptable temps. I would recommend replacing them in time though (I replace mine every 5 years max), as you don't want to wait until a failing 10c part in a 50 buck AIO cooler kills your entire system.

Air coolers. Water coolers are not practical and more expensive for an average person and require a lot of maintenance, especially custom water cool loop ones.
I've seen youtubers that build PCs for a living and they have experienced custom water cooler loop issues.

Air coolers dont put you through that BS. and this is coming from me that wants a NZXT AIO

Both types use air though....

One simply uses air and a "liquid" together. The radiator in AIO coolers are cooled through air + fans, just as a standard air cooler is. The "liquid" is just the transfer media between CPU/GPU block, and radiator.

What kind of rip off merchant are you buying your pumps from? A ddc is about 50 bucks and a d5 is around £80, I've had 1 (d5) die in a decade after 4 years of continual near 24/7 usage.

Never had an aio pump die, longest running is 13 years, the fluid evaporating caused it's retirement not the pump lol and air coolers are as reliable as the fans you fit.

Some of the best cases you can buy are in the £100-150 price range.

Those passive cases will not handle a top tier system if you even glance at over clocking and you cannot run fast memory in them if you want the system to remain passive as fast ddr5 needs some firm if active cooling, be it air flow from fans or water blocks.

As I've said before, it's about picking the right tool for the job, but, overall tower > aio > custom loop when it comes to performance and added perfirmance comes at a price.

If you are not into heavily overclocking high end parts you don't need a custom loop at all, a big aio will handle pretty much any cpu and tower coolers tend to reach their limits on the high end or heavily overclocked systems and I'd not use one beyond mid tier tbh.

reservoir pump combo (due limited mounting space) with D5 : 230 euro first and second one broke within 15 months of buying... third one seems to hold out.. now 2 years old..... but first two
before that I had an XSPC ion, 170 euro..broke within a year
before that.. I had an AIO rainrech 360 green.. 290 euro.. broke within 1.5 year

so yeah headachefile here...

does it keep my pc noticable cooler absolutely.. always only 2-5 degrees above room temperature no matter the load...

cpu basicly always under 25C in winter (when my house is 18C) and under 40C in summer (when my house is sadly 35C)

gpu thats in sane loop.. and is placed after the cpu.. always under 50C


with aircooling that same cpu would be closer to 50C and a similair gpu 70C
but with the original AIO it was also 50C.. so there is no noticable difference with AIO.

did I want watercooling.. no..
but basicly my gpu broke during the first cryptocraze and I could after 15 months of my 10k pc that than was just 15 months old (so I only had it 15 months than it was hold in rma at the store for 15 months due no gpu to replace the one I had that broke under warranty excisted)

when finally i could getr a 2080ti and it was an watercooled model;.. it was get that or risk another 15 months of no pc and my 10k pc aging and depreciating without me using it...

so I kinda went full loop to get back int he game.. but witth the headaches that loop caused me since... i kind of wished I never did.. but I could not just rip it out since now I have a gpu with waterblock.... and than I would have to buy a new gpu too... and than a new pump is the cheaper option./..

at least new pumps are easier to get than a new gpu during a cryptobubble..

and than there is the issue than with a full custom loop most shops will refuse to even DO an rma on your system not even just test whats broken with spare parts so I know what to replace...
