What tf is going on with the GPU market?
I was just dabbling around, checking some pricing for AMD / NVIDIA cards, and everything is literally sold out right now, and not only that, the prices for them are about $500-$700 over MSRP. Are we hitting some weird GPU shortage again? Tariffs? I haven’t bothered looking for about 5-6 months after I had gotten my 4080S, but I’m thinking about just selling it and waiting it out for awhile considering I’m gaming much less than I was before, and was looking to smack in a dinky mid tier GPU for awhile.

Hope you all are well, and looking forward to learning more about what exactly is going on.

I was exactly doing the same, checking out some prices and availability for NVIDIA cards, since I want to replace my EVGA RTX 3070 as soon as possible.

But the situation is....absolutely crazy (to put it mildly). The 50 generation is as good as not available and if they are, only on ebay for 500 ~ 700€ above MSRP.

Same goes for the 40 generation. Prices are absolutely bonkers, even on ebay.

And you know what the craziest part is: there are really people who are paying those nasty prices. Just look on ebay, what some lobotomized individuals are ready to pay for a used RTX 4080 or 4090.

I bet this is some market manipulation (again).
Manufacturer shenanigans. Nvidia stopped the production of most 4000 series and had paper launch with almost no stock for 5000 series.
AMD also stopped the production of lot of cards and rumor has it is amassing stockpiles of RX 9070 XT into warehouses for March launch so they can use aggressive price on it.
Also it`s not helping that lion share of available silicon is going for AI tech instead of gaming and gamers are basically hanged out to dry since everybody are making monster profits with AI tech and nobody cares about gamers anymore despite gamers being the ones who basically raised both Nvida and AMD into where they are now.

It is fairly borked.
The RTX 5000 series cards are in limited supply and poor value for money.
So now more are looking at the 4000 series cards to upgrade to.
Prices are going up.
Availability going down.
I hope the situation is better when AMD release their new cards.

It sucks.
Tariffs, Lack of competition, Shortage, Demand and supply
Gaming silicon is also in competition with AI usage. More money in ai?

In February 5070 ti should launch (Feb 20, 2025?). In March maybe 5070, 5060, 5060 ti and amd cards. Nvidia cards might not be great vs last gen improvement wise. Still short on vram. Need to watch the software also and ray tracing vs rasterization performance. Some cards might do ray tracing well even though it's being added as mandatory to more games. Some AAA games coming up that have ray tracing as mandatory.

Tariffs might also have additional effects on non tariff costs like metal to build gpu parts, ships, inflation, etc...

Gpu prices have risen a notable amount over the last two months.

So, am I wrong, if I assume that there won't be an improvment of the situation any time soon?

Same thing is most likely to happen with the launch of the RTX 5070 Ti and the RTX 5070:
only few stocks, most cards will be snatched away by scalpers who then try to make a profit on ebay.

Yeah, Intel has 1 or 2 mid-tier cards, which would be nice for solid 1080p gaming, but their drivers are terrible, as far as I have heard and read. So they are out of the equation.

Again...the avarage customer / gamer is the one who gets f'ed.

Depends on supply. Should improve. Not much motivation for people to upgrade from 40xx nvidia series. 4x frame gen still has artifacts, ghosting, etc.... Amd cards might help. Supply should increase over time.

Chinese New year might also be another cause. People might get significant time off during the holiday. This might be decreasing production.
whats hapening is a few things

demand is high :
-the law that bans exports or chips to china with more than x calculation power will be made tighter in may 2025
this means while right now only 4090 and all that performs better is banned from bring sold in china.. soon a lot of other models will be too.
-thus in the feq months left they try to sell as many there as they still can. all the supply that does excist is send there.

-trump will slap tarifs and more are feared.. thus any cards on route to or europe have been send to usa instead to get in before the tarifs hit.

-american people fear the tarifs and expect prices to get worse so even people not planning to buy now buy buy buy now before things get worse

-nvidea are ♥♥♥♥♥.. they reduced 4000 series stock & production
( to drive up scarcity and price price and make 5000 series apear a better deal than it is)

-nvidea are greater ♥♥♥♥♥ they did not shift this dropped 4000 production to 5000 cards do thrre was no build up stock to do fill yhe shelves for a real launch..

why?
there is very high AI demand
it is far more profitable to produce and sell AI cards.. so all chip production viable to be used for AI is used for AI leaving gpus obly the scraps.

greeeed.. sure the new cards are badly designed and inefficient.. (cheap out on r&d) and overpriced.. so they LIKE to purposely produce to little..
if you sell rotting garbadge snacked on a plate with 0 effort for 100x gourmet prices it helps if people are starving.

no competition.. amd already announced they will not make a new top model card.. so they got a monopoly..
even lower on the chain.. amd & intel have yet to launch... their lowend and midend products..

people are idiots.. they should reject dlss & upscaling.. and reveal that the emperor is naked.. but they only see nummber bigguuur..
who cares about building cars that can actually go 0-100 faster of you can just instal a speedometer in km/h instead of m/s.
-competetors who have honest specs are killed off by customers who think 1/4 pounder is bigger than 1/3 pounder..

planned obselensance.. new games are purposely made worse than soviet cars.. put together fast and sloppy.. cheap for the developer who saves on programming expenses for optimalisation.. but this makes them very very slow and bad to run.
basicly you need an ofroader to get to work cause the cause they are to lazy to build proper roads..
if you turn the dlss and upscaling crap off.. even a 5090 will get in some tiles just 12-15 frames..
Looks like scalpers again, eBay has a large supply of 5080's and 90's for sale

5060 series might be delayed until April.
Ehh I`m pretty sure that if they finally launch the 9070 XT it will still be 1000 euros or more here because of the greedy retail stores and scalpers.

Glad I am not in the market for a video card right now! Of course that could change but doubtful.
Well, Newegg has refurbished rtx 3090's for only $1900 :steamfacepalm:
