Do SSD's Refresh Stored Data?

Sorry if that doesn't make sense.

I recently discovered that SSD's will lose their data over a few years if they are not connected to your PC, so they are useless for long term storage of data.

My question is, do they refresh the data when they are connected? So, for example, with a removable drive, will plugging it in to a PC for ten minutes every year help?

Or for long term storage should we all be using something else?

All drives will degrade over time, ssd's average between 2-5 years, hdd's around 10 years. In reality this can be much longer but no guarantees. If the data is important then save it to hdd and resave periodically. Periodical saves would work with ssd's too they would just need to be more frequent.

Ssd's can be powered on periodically to keep the data, (no idea if 10 minutes is good or not). but imo the older they get the less reliable they are going to be.

Again though that is powered off years for the most part. Powered on is a different story and such SSDs cause easily last well beyond 10 years.

If you need to backup data for whatever reasons and go store the drive some place off-site for long periods of time; such as 6 months or more, then use a reliable HDD, not an SSD.
