GTX 980 Displayport not working
Hi. Recently upgraded from a GTX680 to a GTX980, and am having issues with my displayport.

My old setup was two monitors, both in DVI ports, but one using a DVI adaptor. I also had a HDMI cable in the HDMI slot which I would plug into my TV as and when needed, then unplug when I was finished. I had no problems with this at all.

With the GTX980 I first tried putting the DVI cable in the DVI slot, then using a displayport-dvi adaptor plugged into the display port, and then a further DVI-VGA adaptor, but this did not work, I figured it was just too many adaptors.

So I swapped it round, so I now had the DVI-VGA adaptor in the DVI slot, and the displayport-dvi adaptor in the displayport. Again, I also had a HDMI cable to plug into my TV as and when needed. This worked fine. The only issue I had was that when I turned my monitor off, the pc no longer picked it up at all. It was quite annoying but I could live with it.

But then one day after watching a moving on my TV, I unplugged the HDMI cable from my TV. This then turned off the monitor that was plugged into the displayport (via displayport-dvi adapter.) Since then I cannot get either of my monitors to work using either of the displayports.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to how unplugging a HDMI cable could stop the displayport from working, especially when I had already done this a number of times with no problems, but as far as I can tell nothing else about my pc or the setup has changed. I have since updated gpu drivers, but this hasn't solved the issue. Also at the time the displayport stopped working my drivers were up to date.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

you need a dp to vga adapter for vga to work
dp to dvi adapters are digital only

Thanks this explains why it didn't work the first time. Still at a loss as to why the displayports suddenly stopped working with the dp to dvi adaptors when using a dvi cable on my main monitor though.

Eliminate VGA for this equation; don't use it.

My second monitor only has a vga port, so it's that or single screen, (which is killing me!) Like I said I had it working fine for a couple of weeks no problem. Also the dvi monitor doesnt work with the displayports either, leading me to believe the issue is either softward related, or a problem with the graphics card. Keep meaning to put my old card back in to try the displayport on that see if it works.

Tried with my old graphics card, no joy. Seems to be either software or adapter related.

VGA wont support 144hz, pass on that. I mean it will attempt to run whatever's pushed through it but it will look like crap, not a good plan there.
