Setting up dedicated server(s)?
I have this posted in the Linux forum but I thought maybe I might get some help from others here as well;

So, I have this mini PC, long story short. I put Linux Mint Cinnamon on it. That’s what I’m used to using.

I want to set it up to exclusively to act as a dedicated server for some Steam games that me and my friends play.

I don’t really know where to begin. When I search online, I get a lot of different information about all of it. I’m not looking to have this be for anything other than hosting dedicated servers for Steam games. I do not need it, or want it, to do anything else.

I know I’ll need Steam CMD or whatever, but that’s when a lot of guides lose me. They either don’t explain enough, or try to do something more than I’m trying to do, like they start talking about setting up entire home networks and stuff. Which is cool, but I’m not there yet. I just want to host some dedicated servers for me and my buddies, maybe have one be public, who knows.

Do I have to set up some home networks server first before I can do that? Idk.

If anyone wants to help me find a place to begin. That’d be great. I’d really appreciate it. A link, a video, a guide, your own insight, anything really. I’m decent at using my system but I’ve never dabbled with server stuff before, so I’m pretty lost.

Thanks for your time.

I think if you look in Tools on your Steam, I forget which tab brigs them into view but I'm sure I remember seeing some dedicated server stuff for some games in there, could try launching them if any are for the right game, I've not ran a server since Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam, and all you did was download the server client back then and launch it.
In Steam Library > you have option to display ganes, media, tools... tick the tools to show all of those. Now you will see Server related app you can install for certain games listed now. Some will require a certain version of Source SDK to also be installed

FYI for most of the linux game servers you don't need to authenticate via steamcmd to download and install them.

In regards to networking; yes you'll need to setup a network to play a networked game. For most game servers on linux the guides are simply telling you to configure the game server to listen on a specific port (if it's configurable) and how to open that port in the firewall so that other systems (e.g. your game clients) can reach the server.

Lastly, a lot of guides will then also tell you how to or provide you with a start script so that you can run the server as a service and can easily start/stop/restart the game server and configure it to start when the system starts up so if you reboot the physical server/system the game server will start back up when the system finishes booting.

EDIT: if you have specific questions about a specific game and/or guide ask those specific things so people can help elaborate on where you are having issues understanding the guide
