What is the reason why you feel tired of using headphones?
i will never run anything less then 5.1 as it gives me advantages in game for first person shooters.....had it running since 2003
sound bar can have decent sound, but not good lows or channel separation
a decent bookshelf will have wider freq range and can be positioned anywhere
Monitor speakers are hit and miss, but mostly miss.
very few monitors and tvs have good speakers
they try to to way too thin to have any good sound at all
Luckily, speakers are kind of buy once, cry once kind of affair, as in good second hand speakers will still sound good now.
For competitive games I find headphones are better, especially with friends, can't really use a mic with speakers booming.
But, for everything else, I love my full surround 7.1.2 setup, speakers are old other than the atmos pair and I run them through a denon x4700h, brings games to life in a way headphones just can't.
I'd recommend 5.1 setup using second hand parts, the extra 2 surround (7.1 instead of 5.1) are a subtle add, but not really that special.
Atmos is nice, so if you get an amp/a reciever that can handle that or be extended in the future, it's cool to have, I plan to add a second sub and 2 rear atmos speakers in the future, but thst will require an extra Amp as my av reciever can only power 9 speakers.
The sound bar can come later if you really wanted it but speakers > sound bar for all purposes (just do not get junk or expensive trash).
True Stereo is the way to go but expensive, while simulated/modified stereo can deliver great cost on performance.
I jumped the gun here talking about Digital Audio interfaces/external sound cards but same rings true with speakers as well in some instances especially when talking about surround sound capabilities.

to me it was worth it , sounds much better than a pc speaker setup.
I used to have a set of 301's Series 3, great sounding speakers, kind of a trippy sound to them.
