You need DisplayPort instead of HDMI. HDMI is known for not being able to output very high refresh rates.
Make sure you also have good CPU for TF2, otherwise you will have trouble reaching 240 FPS, though reaching 240 FPS won't always be possible in some extreme scenarios.
Yes thanks I have a Ryzen 5 5600 and get like 500 to 600 fps on low settings

Not sure what games would run fast enough on a RX 480 though to take advantage of it though.
OP has mentioned that they are going to be playing TF2. Any DX9 games of that type on even that caliber of GPU will easily run at several hundreds of FPS and will max our before the GPU limits start kicking in.
Alas, the RX 480 isn't that powerful at 1080p. Low settings, 1080p, you're looking at lows of 70 FPS to highs of 170 on the 8GB version.

I know a modern CPU helps, but not seen it help that much... That's way above RX 480 specs.

should do but you'll be maxing out hdmi 2.0, use the displayport, it has almost double the bandwidth and you'll have less issues, potentially better freesync support which you'll need
But my monitor does not have dp port 1.4 it has a dp port 1.2 can that support 240hz on 1080p?

In tf2 I'm getting 500 fps on low settings with Ryzen 5 5600 and 3200mhz 32gb ram

But the HDMI 2.0b can support 240hz at 1080p right without any lags?

Oh, nice. Didn't think a CPU upgrade would add that much. If can do that, then it's just about the monitor and what it supports.

I'd stick to Display Port over HDMI if possible though.

ah if its only a 1.2 on the monitor monitor then use either, if its 1.2a then i think that gets you freesync support if the monitor supports it so i would prefer it personally

lag isnt the issue with display bandwidth, the issue is more screen flicker or cutting out etc, it will probably be fine tho but if you get issues its usually the cable, use a shorter one if you get issues

your real question is if hdmi 2 has enough bandwidth to support that resolution at that framerate, and it does
Oh sorry just checked The monitor I ordered is 180hz so I guess both HDMI 2.0b and dp port 1.2 both are perfect for 1080p 180hz?

Sad to see that HDMI is still stuck at 1080p 60Hz. I wonder what kind of magic 4k 144Hz TV's use?

Incorrect. HDMI 2.1b supports 4k at 120hz and 8k at 60hz.
HDMI 1.4b supports 1080p at 120hz

The 480 is basically the same as the 580. You can even B.i.O.S. flash a 480 to act like a 580.

I mean it's probably not what you asked but you edited out your original post so now this is just a thread about generic info. on the 480 per the title as far as I'm concerned. :-P

Might help you to eek out some extra perf. too.
