Steam OS?
Can someone explain if this is something we'll have to buy from Steam or is it just a Linux OS you can use if you want (like other Linux stuff).

I want to get off Windows 10 when Steam won't allow Windows 10 anymore since I don't like Microsoft because they're awful (morally and commercially).

Unfortunately, Steam has also been doing a bunch of morally condemnable things (allegedly profiting from under age gambling, doing nothing against extremism on their platform), so I don't know if I want to give Steam money anymore either.

My entire game library (300+ games) is on Steam though, because I bought all of them before I learned about the horrible things Steam is doing. I'm slowly rebuilding my library on GoG (hopefully they're not evil too).

Like, will Steam be making money off Steam OS or will it just be a Linux OS, like other Linux OS' and be free or not make the creators money.

Linux is attractive because it's open sourced and no one owns it. Plus no bloat.

Not everything needs a price, and if they put a price on it, a lot of people aren't going to use it and would more likely stay on Windows than try anything else.

There's also more to value than putting a price on it, there are things that don't have an actual price but are priceless in value.

where I agree with your stance not everything need to be free when you consider the amount of effort that is require to maintain an OS

I'd doff my hat to the Linux community if i had one :)

And I don't think I can think of anything else where so much time and effort is dedicated to create a free OS for people anywhere in the world.

That in it's self is amazing gift from amazing people.

It'll be free through community support, Valve can't do it alone, it took them forever just to get Windows drivers for the OLED Deck so people who wanted to use Windows had no audio support for basically over a year.

There are some distros like Red Hat which cost money but they're a niche, nobody wants to pay for an OS. At least, people that can actually use their brain and understand how pointless it is to wait for and pay for SteamOS.

It will a great gift for those who want steamOS3 and I agree there is no need to wait for steamOS3 if your willing to try something different and learn new things along the way.

The issue is that people don't want anything to change and don't want to have to do anything, and that's why Windows is likely always going to be around and the primary choice, regardless of how much Microsoft ruins it.

It's basically Stockholm Syndrome at this point, no matter how many times Microsoft pisses people off, they keep coming back for more.

WinOS does require a good deal of tweaking but I'm so used to it, it's like second nature to me that I don't find it a big deal. I just see zero point in Win11 still. Everything runs well for most part on Win10 22H2

seems alot of people have high hopes for linux being safer than windows.im not so sure thats the case the mere fact that no one owns it i would think leaves it wide open to cyber spying with
no consequences be it government or private citizens.please tell me why this would not be the case ? seems to me the door is left wide open.and what makes it so impossible that this is not case ? yeah you dont get adds but what you may be getting is far worse.just a thought.

I wouldn't know how secure Linux is compare to windows I only really use my PC for gaming it not used for banking or any important use cases, it's just gaming really other than I rarely watch stuff on youtube but even that has become less and less plus the odd bit of web browsing.

But for people who use their computer for banking or keep sensitive info stored on it I wouldn't know how good or secure Linux is compared to windows?

Quite the opposite. The GNU project has had a focus on security for far longer than Windows has, and as the saying goes, more eyes means fewer bugs.

I remember the old PC vs Mac commercials mocking Windows' then-new UAC popups back with Windows Vista, but Linux permissions and Sudo and SELinux and AppArmor were around long before Windows started enforcing such things.

In any case, something like a third of the entire Internet is run off Apache servers, so you can bet vulnerabilities are jumped on pretty quickly.
Not to mention, the SteamOS on the Steam Deck locks the rootspace by default, making you jump through hoops to enable anything but sandboxed Flathub programs. I don't know if the upcoming general SteamOS will do the same.

That's good to know and hear but are there there not any antivirus that work with Linux because if there is then maybe use a third party anti virus and VPN to help with the ever growing threat malware posses

not sure if there is an Anti virus or VPN that runs on Bazzite (arch)?

There's plenty of VPNs that work on Linux like ProtonVPN, Linux has various firewalls you can use, and there's some antivirus options like ClamAV and other commericial AVs that support Linux

I did read the other day ClamTK has recently been discontinued due to lack of willing support and time so will no longer be updated or supported by the Dev.

well I say recently i think it was back in March of 2024 I thought ClamAV was maintained by or was the same as ClamTK but I think you would know more about that than me.

Anyone can pick it up even if a maintainer drops it, and as far as I know ClamAV is still running

I just don't understand why anyone cares about SteamOS and wanted it for Desktop so badly. Just install a good Linux. It's the same thing.

Win10 won't lose major support until at least 2032

Because Windows is "Open it up and go."

Linux is "Do all this stuff and also there's something called packets and Proton and Wine and a bunch of other stuff because you need to."

Alright yeah cool. Windows is popular because it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ brainless. Linux needs a "Brainless" OS. SteamOS will be that OS.
