Confused on ATX 3.1 for PSU
I am buying a 5080. I have a 1200w EVGA PSU. It is ATX 2. I keep seeing people saying that as long as I have 1200w, I am good (as long as I properly use its adapter). But I also keep getting told that the "power delivery" is better on the 3.1 and I should upgrade because of that. I get that it is better at power delivery, but with a 1200w PSU, do I really needed to upgrade? I am confused on the issue because if it has enough watts to power it, how will weaker power delivery inhabit or harm my system? I am not saying upgrading is a bad idea. I just do not want to spend on it atm.

Thoughts?

do you have all of the cables the psu came with?

does it have all the 12vhpwr cables needed for the gpu?

I think RTX 5000 will come with the same power connector we used for RTX 4090 or 4080. So, no need to get a new PSU since yours is fit from wattage point of view.

Yes. I still have all the cables from the PSU.

Not sure what you are asking on the second question. I have 3 separate 8 pins that are needed for the 1-3 power adapter that is coming with the 5080.

ATX 2 in general does not have 12VHPWR/12V-2x6. unless you mean adapters.

*and to OP, the only practical difference is that you won't have to use an adapter for the 5080. slightly safer, but as long as you make sure everything's firmly connected and you're not leaning the cables by too much, you'll be solid.
newer PSUs tend to be overall better: more efficient and more stable, but that doesn't mean they will automatically be better power supplies even if they meet ATX 3.1 specs (since those aren't actually more strict than ATX-2-in-general and ATX 3.0)

the 12v hpwr connector should tell the gpu how much power it can draw from it

if you are using pci-e power connector adapters, they do not properly tell the gpu its limits

if the psu you have did not include all the connectors needed for the build, you need a different psu
never use splitters or adapters for gpu power
