But I digress, having the Steam branding and everything preconfigured would boost it's image and awareness with consumers.

... when Valve released it.
Let's hope the SteamOS team can fix a lot of the current issues before too long.
Good for people who use Linux.
If you take that into consideration, it's not strange that they support their "potencial competitor" - Lenovo. SteamDeck is not the main product for Valve. SteamDeck is more like Google Nexus (phone) or Google Pixel now. They will keep developing it, as sort of "reference platform", but they are happy to share the OS with others, because it supports their main product, which is Steam platform.
Windows has no future as gaming platform (Valve just couldn't care less...). Sooner or later Microsoft will get bored with OS development and they will fully focus on cloud. They also believe they can move gaming to the cloud - see their latest MS Flight Simulator.
Nvidia is playing similar game as other big techs. They want to decide who they support, who they don't. That also makes the choice of hardware obvious for Valve. They don't want to be dependend on Nvidia, so they go with AMD. AMD giving open source support, gives them freedom.
(all is just my opinion) ;-)
whats the worst that can happen

Lopsided analog sticks are a crime against nature. If Valve ever does another Steam Deck, they need to keep the controls as they are, with maybe a slide-out physical keyboard instead of the pain in the ass touchscreen keyboard.
It depends. Offset sticks work well on a controller but is terrible on the Switch because there isn’t enough controller to comfortably grip on the right joycon.
Sony’s controller has a similar problem because the sticks are set so low, but when the sticks are placed up high it’s very comfortable to hold and play level sticks because your hands have enough grip to hold onto comfortably.
