i posted these issues before on microsoft this is a bug that likely never gets fixed pretty sure it exists in 24h2 but do not care to figure out i went to linux and the problem is not there
also on windows since i was making custom icons to begin with eventually at some point it bricks even more causing the icons to just turn black almost like it hit some kind of limit but the truth is there is no limit on those caches or at least there should not be as previous windows versions did not limit the cache
going into that rabbits hole windows supports max 256x256 icons linux supports 512x512 and some 1024x1024 icons wel png as .ico is not used in linux for 512x512 support in windows you want to use onecommander the 1024x1024 icons in windows do not exist
the 512x512 do display in windows but if you open onecommander alongside file explorer you can see that onecommander actually has sharper icons meaning windows will still downscale 512x512 icons to 256x256
for custom icons you would want to use resource hacker or use gimp to export it as a icon keep in mind the rule is power of 2 so 1x1 2x2 but not 3x3 4x4 6x6 but not 5x5 and so on if you do not do so the icon refuses to open or load and yes 2x4 and vice versa works aswel
so unless you start using onecommander you just have to deal with the explorer bug
there is no problem with that
its the icon (.ico) files that it points to that may be missing
check if steam has the icon files
\\steam\steam\games\
if it does not, verify game cache, and it should grab the icon too
or just change its properties, and point the icon to the games install folder and games exe file for the icon
it wil still brick them if you take older versions of windows 10 and 11 you will notice steam icons never break so yeah steam ain't to blame microsoft explorer.exe is as i mentioned onecommander keeps the icons while still using the thumbnail and icon cache from windows it has a option to make its own but not needed
microsoft is aware of the issue just that them being aware of it means nothing because it been months of them being aware and the issue is still present in windows
