Games stuttering badly after an hour or so?
I'm having a stuttering issue in my games after gaming for like an hour or longer. I'm not sure what's going on.

Basically if I play a game any longer than like an hour-ish, I'll get this terrible stutter that starts. Once the stutter starts (which is out of the blue usually), it'll stay until I reboot the game. Restarting the games will get rid of it.

I've been watching my temps, RAM and loads via MangoHUD and I don't see anything other than my frametime graph going insane (because stutter), that would indicate I'm having an issue.

The Frametime will go from steady and normal

"......................../\................................................./\" (an occasional tick isn't unusual)

to something like

"/\../\../\../\../\../\../\.../\../\../\../\../\../\../\../\../\.../\.../\../\./\./\../\../\" (nonstop ticking and stuttering)

If that makes any sense.

I have no idea what's causing this but it's annoying, especially when I'm playing online games, since I have to finish whatever I'm doing with a stutter (either a match or whatever), until I can restart it. Also, restarting my games ever hour or so is annoying.

Any ideas what's going on? It's a really bad, sudden stutter.

Linux Mint 22.1

The answer was related to the Steam Overlay.

By turning off the Steam Overlay, for some reason, the games will begin to stutter terribly (on Linux Mint, maybe other distros too).

The fix is to turn the Steam Overlay back on.

From what I gather, this is an issue that has popped up ever since Steam introduced Video Recording.

To stop Linux Mint from having massive stutter after playing for a little bit, make sure the Steam Overlay is turned on.

At least with this setup:

Linux Mint 22.1
RTX 3060 (Driver v550.120)
32RB RAM
Intel i5 11400f
Proton Experimental

Which games?

Does it happen when playing single player campaigns?

Have you any other apps open at the same time?

Pretty much all games it seems

Yes, it happens in single player and multiplayer games.

Nothing else other than Steam and MangoHUD/GOverlay.

I've found this thread here online: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2591868

Related to what seems to be the same issue. They claim Steam itself is at fault.

I don't use Steam Recording though, as in it's turned off for me, but I will add that command to my games and see if it changes anything and report back.
I've had a computer almost exactly like yours with rtx 3060 and 11400f. It never had any problems but it was running windows instead.
Linux.

Things I suggest, in order:

Try a different Proton version

Try a different driver

Are you using the newest kernel?
(If you do update and the boot sequence gets screwed up then use the recovery options in the grub menu to boot to an older kernel)

I did recently update the kernel, yeah. I’ll look into going back one.

I hadn’t tried new proton versions or drivers. I’ll see.

I won’t really be able to test much until Monday but I appreciate any insights in the meantime.

that is eye opening stuff in that one thread. the first time i ever tried nouveau drivers it went so bad i thought i was getting hacked by french people. i always get crashes and strange things happen whenever theyre on, the first thing i do with every distro is blacklist them.
