Dolby Atmos sound system worth it?
Hi all, I am wondering if it is worth it to get a dolby atmos soundbar with rear speakers
Currently I am using old logitech z5500 5.1 speakers connected with the 3x 3.5mm jack
The good thing using this traditional setup is any game that support surround sound will work with no issue
My concern is while a lot of games support 5.1 surround sound not all of them are dolby digital/atmos.
So my question is if I have atmos speaker and the game does support 5.1 surround but not dolby digital or atmos, can I still play using surround sound?

Use a Digital Receiver and stand-alone speakers; not crap from Logitech

a half decent stereo bookshelf set is better than logi 7.1 sets

if you can find a htib 5.1 set with hdmi inputs, that has powered sub
most are a good starting point to upgrade later

To answer your question, yes, surround will work fine even if the source isn't atmos, those speakers just won't be used.

It's easy to suggest an amp and seperate speakers when it's not your money or space and a cheap surround setup will offer far better 'surround' sound than even the greatest pair of stereo speakers could.
Yes half decent bookshelf will likely sound better for stereo, but OP said they are specifically after surround.

Now, I will suggest that before you buy your new sound bar that you look for second hand stuff, audio equipment ages amazingly well performance wise while the price drops rapidly.

The av receiver would be the most expensive part (I got a denon x4700h for £700 when it's £1500-1800 new - no need to spend this much) and having recently added 2 atmos speakers it's a neat effect, but not really mind blowing compared to when I first went to 5.1 many years ago with decent-ish speakers (as in expensive for the average person, 'cheap' for audiophile snobs lol).

I went from 5.1 to 7.1 to 7.1.2 I plan to add a second sub and 2 more atmos speakers at some point, but beyond 5.1 it's a subtle improvement.

Thanks for your input, I guess I will start to shop around for AV receiver or soundbar

Look at the second hand market, you will save a ridiculous ammount of money, as long as they haven't been damaged, old speakers that used to sound good, will still sound good today.

My main tower speakers I bought when I was 19, I'm 43 now, sure new ones would sound better, but, not really £1000 better, same story with my surrounds, but the problem is, new 'cheap' speakers, likely won't sound any better, maybe worse.
