You are correct about zen being safe at stock. I should have clarified that it was mostly people that haphazardly toggled cbs and pbo without monitoring anything.

Does the computer need to be off whilst flashing the bios?

but better to flash from within bios
either way it takes the next boot for changes to take effect
I booted my desktop up and it had 3 options. The F3 option was flash bios that is a quick way to get you into the update bios section instead of finding it.
most are easy to follow and can read bios update from any drive formatted fat32/ntfs/exfat as long as its not encrypted like windows bitlocker does
