cheap if you buy a 5-10 pack
they should last around 10-15 years
most lithium coin cell batteries are 3v
current is near 0, larger size will just last longer
reverse polarity will damage something, just make sure its correct
most of the connectors are easy to reverse with a pin if its the wrong way
laptop battery pack will have longest shelf storage life at around 60-80% charge
if the cmos battery dies, it will just forget the time, and bios settings
may need to change the keyboard default fn key on/off or boot order, not many other settings need changes in laptops
Even back in the Socket-7 / Pre Intel Pentium days.
Laptops can vary of course. As those aren't exactly standard. However most Laptops just have a 2032 coin battery within a wrapping that uses a 2-pin wire based connector. If this is the case you can replace it by cutting open its shroud and replacing the battery. Then simply use heat-shrink wrap or electrical tape as a means of replacing the outer wrapping it originally uses.
You don't actually sync Desktops and Laptops through the Internet; you simply open the BIOS and set the Time/Date. The internet sync that can occur later through your OS is just for mere accuracy purposes and is optional.
I guess if you really want to get technical here, my laptop DOES have a CMOS battery just not a traditional one. 🙃
Most laptops do have a cmos battery though. As most have a replacement main battery so they wouldn't use that main large battery to keep the cmos alive.
What I need to do is put in a higher rated mAh battery for extended life.
