What do those numbers after the chip name mean?

CPU model , both are 4th generation Icore CPU.
what is there to compare ? ... the I3 4130 is a 2 cores 4 thread cpu having a boost clock or 3.2ghz and the I5 4460 is 4 cores 4 thread cpu with a boost clock of 3.4 ghz.

both are from the same generation so I don't exect a huge difference in performances , maybe 15 to 25%.

I would take the i5... more cores, similar clock speed, newer

OP are you asking which is better? If so i5 4460 is better because it's 4 physical cores. i3 4130 only has 2 physical cores.

But, not sure why you want outdated CPU's, maybe more context about your discussion can give you much better answers, unless that all you wanted to know, then this is a done finish discussion just like that.
even an I7 from that generation is gonna start being pushed hard by modern games.

if what you're looking for is to upgrade an old computer for gaming , you might consider getting an I7 like the I7 4770 if you can find one at a decent price.

At that point, OP should just consider grabbing new mobo, ram, and i3 or i5 11th / 12th gen, or Ryzen R5 or R7 5000 series.
Sorry i forgot to mention im building older pc to play games from 2005 and downward.

Why? You can play games 2005 and downward using modem hardware, so that doesn't make any sense.

Are you seeking to running old OS like Windows 95, or something? If so might want to consider Pentium 3, or something, not sure what games you're after exactly. I mean DOS pointless as the emulation works just fine for modem hardware.

No il planning installing Win XP also is Pentium 3 strong enough to run games from 2005 downward ?

If doing it for Xp, then kind of pointless really since same said games works on Windows 10, there barely any games that refuse to work outside of XP, and by barely I really mean a pin needle in a hay stack kind of barely.

Also no idea what games you're after exactly, so I'm gonna say no if for games 2000 and up, but below yes.
Idk about the i3, but I had an i5 4460 and it was great, no regrets.

In that case, the i5 is more than enough. Go for it.
Neither of those. Youll get a 4670k for 10-15 bucks and you can push that little bad boy up to 4,8-5Ghz. Depends on the chip quality though but Haswell was so darn OCable....
I mean even an i3 10100f destroys the i7 4790k but still, gotta love Haswell.

My Haswell top list (without refreshs).

1. 4790k
2. 4670k
3. 4770k
