500w enough for GTX 770?
I am currently running an AMD FX-6300 running stock with an R7 260x. I have a 500w powersupply running them. I'm currently looking into getting a GTX 770 and i was wondering if I should also pickup a new powersupply.

Honestly depends on a number of things. Do you overclock? Ever want to overclock? Plan to use more than one gpu in the future?

Another factor is your PSU rating. You can do a good deal more with an 80+ plat than a non rated or even 80+bronze PSU.

Short answer. You can probably get by with a 500w

a 6300 uses about 100-230w
a gtx 770 uses about 250w
Then there is ram...
hard drives
and other misc powered items.

So it would be close. 550w and I would of felt more comfortable saying yes.

At this point I can only say it would be a good investment to get a 650w 80+gold psu.

there is an example.

The recommended minimum for the GTX 770 is 600 W; so you will need to pick up a new one :dealwithit:.

500 watts...not sure. I have a 600 watt system with a gtx 770 and fx-8320 overclocked to 4GHz. I really don't even think I use more than 400 watts to be honest.

eeh, 500W is cutting it really close. I suggest getting at least a 600W psu. (In my opinion the best watt psu you should be looking for is 750W so you have wattage to spair for other parts.)

What do you mean by "more watts"?

Most, if not all, Seasonic power supplies that are labeled 550w can usually deliver 650w before shutting down.

Really? didn't know that could happen with psus, its almost like overclocking them lol.

I can tell you a 520W Seasonic S12II can power an i5 4670 + 770 + several drives without any issues for almost a year now in my PC.

Think of it this way:
i5 TDP: 84W
770 TDP: 230W
= 314W
the remaining components are maybe a few dozen watts at worst.
And we're talking TDP here, often you don't reach that power consumption.
So we have like maybe 350W as the highest amount the system would use on full load. On a 520W PSU that leaves at least 170W for peaks.

With the FX6300 it shouldn't be much higher as that's a 95W TDP CPU.

If you are not overclocking...500W is more than fine. Even if your card is running at 100% the most it draws is about 250W and considering the rest of your build...tha's gonna be your largest power hog.

500W is not enough for GTX 770 in AMD PC. You could prob get away with this in Intel PC if you have qood quality PSU from decent brand but not with AMD. Get yourself 600-650W PSU.

You're out of your mind.

444W and that's without any overclocking, additional HDD or SSD.
You want at least 100-150W spare room with PSU so it wont run at max all the time.
Also you need one 6-pin and one 8-pin PCI-E power connector for GTX 770. All we know his 500W PSU might be generic without any PCI-E cables and some 500W PSU's have only one.
It can be done with something like Corsair CX500 but it will be cutting it too close and not really recommended.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! Currently i have a Corasair CX500m thats 80plus bronze. I'm planning to pick up the 770 and 750w psu and either a SSD or an FX-8350.

@Rumpel: Where do they pull 444W from? 95W CPU + 230W GPU = 325W. So 119W more for what? drives? fans? More like some watts for drives and such and another 100W headroom.

mobo needs power too and fans, usb accessories, ect..

I believe that the CPU, GPU, and motherboard are what draw a majority of the power, things like fans, hard drives, ram, ect use hardly anything.

If you are planning to go for FX-8350 then certainly get better PSU then 500W.

Notice the estimated watts number in top right corner...

You could also get the new R9 280 instead of GTX 770, it takes 30W less power and would work with your Corsair CX500. It's almost as powerful as GTX 770 and costs $100 less.
