Seagate Barracuda 2 TB - RAW partition doesn't want to format [solved]
Hi guys,

I bought a new LG 27EA63 screen because my Samsung P2370 stopped working. Because my pc is quite full I also ordered a Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 2TB hdd. When I installed the Seagate with a 6 GB/s Sata cable and the power plug I looked in disk management and saw the hdd there. Then I progressed though the installation of the partition and selected NTFS to be the file system.

After the installation the partition was not NTFS but RAW? I searched for information and found that RAW is a unusable file system wich means that Windows can't read the hdd or there might be something broken. I tried other ways (format etc.) to get the RAW to NTFS but they alle didn't work.

Do you guys know what I have to do?
I hope we can fix this problem because it might not even be that big.

My system:
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K @ 4.4 Ghz
GPU: MSI N670 PE GDDR5 2 GB
RAM: G.Skill RipjawsX 8 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
PSU: Corsair AX750
Mobo: Asus Maximus V Gene
SSD: Crucial M4 128 GB
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1 TB
HDD: Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 2TB
Case: Corsair Carbide 300R
Screen: LG 27EA63

Best regards,

Bart

Delete the partition and try again. If it can't make a partition it's broken just send it back for a replacement.
I would boot up with just that drive, and a bootable disc that has ActiveKillDisk or DBAN on it.

Then completely wipe the entire drive. When done, power down and hookup your other drives the way you had them, then go into Windows > Disk Management and try making the partition again.

If it fails, send it back, replace it.

All the dots where green but only UltraDMA CRC Errors had a warning triangle.
Maybe this indicates that this is why Windows made it RAW because the connection with SATA isn't right?

The Crucial M4 and Samsung F3 had no traingles. Only green dots so they are still good.

I have a Asus Maximus V Gene with:
ntel® Z77 chipset : *4
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), red
2 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), black
1 x eSATA 3Gb/s port(s), red
1 x mini-SATA 3Gb/s port(s) , black
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10
Supports Intel® Smart Response Technology, Intel® Rapid Start Technology, Intel® Smart Connect Technology
ASMedia® PCIe SATA controller : *6
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), red

See for more info: http://www.asus.com/ROG_ROG/MAXIMUS_V_GENE/specifications/

I have my Asus dvd drive with a 3 gb/s cable to one of the black sata 3 gb/s connectors - I have my Crucial and Samsung with 6 gb/s cables to the 2 red sata 6 gb/s connectors - I have my Seagate with a 6 gb/s cable connected to one of the red Asmedia 6 gb/s connectors connected.
UPDATE:

I connected the Seagate to one of the 3 gb/s ports, windows said it was raw, I deleted the volume, made a new one and now it is NTFS and it works! The only thing is that it will be slower because it doesn't use one of the 6 gb/s ports buy I might change this later. For now it's okay.
Yea shouldn't be any real down-side to having it plugged into SATA 2 vs 3.
Most you going to get out of such a mechanical drive by itself is roughly 140-180 mbps for read; which SATA 2 ports won't have any trouble doing.
