GeForce GTX 560M upgrade?
Hello,

I have an Alienware laptop, the 17x and it came with a Geforce GTX 560M... I got it a couple of years ago. I have noticed some new and a lot better GPUs came out for laptops, and I was wondering if I was able to get an upgrade or if I am just stuck with what I got.

Depends if the GPU is integrated in the mainboard. If it is, you'll need to buy a completely new mainboard with better CPU and GPU, but it'll be kinda hard, knowing Alienware pieces are very expensive.

Any way in finding out if it is integrated in the mainboard? Without fully taking my computer apart.

The M17x has a dedicated card in it. You can upgrade it to at least the 580M, and a 680 should work too. You may be able to use a 780, depending on the version of the M17x and your BIOS.

Hmm no, you are stuck with it the way it is.

Alienware has no used a pluggable GPU since before they became part of Dell.

The GPU is part of the motherboard, while it is possible, u would have to change out the entire motherboard.

Given your model laptop has 500M series GPU, then it was made/released around Q1/Q2 2011. You could get one on Ebay perhaps. Just look for an M17x that has either an 570 or 580; or has SLI.

Not sure where you're getting you information from, since the M17x most definitely has a removable/replacable card - which does not require replacing the motherboard.

If I remember correctly, this was the case for a few years, then they went back to not being integrated in. Im not sure that they sell the cards seperately though, and to be honest, alienware isnt designed to be easily upgradable like a few other brands of high end laptops.

Just like soccerdude said, it will either be soldered on the mobo or it will be a small pci-e card.
